Fine etching of windmills in a landscape in a brownish-black ink, 9" by 11" (14 1/2" by 16 3/4`" framed), pencil signed at lower right by listed artist DIRK BAKSTEEN (1886-1971). The quality of the work is excellent, reminding the viewer of Rembrandt and other better known artists, though Baksteen is a somewhat obscure figure today. Born in Rotterdam and educated in art there at the academy, by 1912 he was in Mol, Belgium, becoming part of the "School of Mol" landscape artists...

It has taken some research on the net to determine that this unusual item is apparently an early 20th century facsimile of an incunabula (pre 1500 printing) leaf from a book. JOHANN GRUENINGER (1455-1533) was a major, prolific early German printer and publisher, who developed an innovative method for illustrating books. This sheet on rag type paper measures 11" by 8". This does not seem to be a limited edition but it is hand signed. A lithograph print of a typical northern New Mexican adobe house of the Santa Fe and Taos region, signed in the plate at lower center with what appears as "J Hill" and dated nearby 48. The black and white image measures 6 1/4" by 9 1/4" inside the mat, 15" by 17 1/2" in simple black wood strip frame. Not examined out of frame but appears very clean and fresh. I have not been able to locate a listed artist by this name that would correspond to this work.
