From 1969 to 1974 Haku Maki produced about 15 Big Red prints and some Big Blue and Green. This one,Poem 71-52, was done in 1971. It depicts the kanji for Power. This striking image slices through the black background from top to bottom in a two-stroke movement. In the period 1966-67, Haku Maki did two large series with Song as the theme. There was Flower Song, a series of 10 prints. And there was Animal Song which was Maki’s Asian Zodiac series, with 12 images. It was also a small series with small editions--50 in the case of Animal Song (released in Kyoto, so very hard to find: only one friend has the full set), I do not know who has the full set of Flower Song. Equally rare is Moon Song...

Poem S B. This small and unpretentious print was a sleeper. Whoever sold it knew not what he had. Indeed neither did I until well after it came here to Beijing. It is a very rare 1968 Maki print. Not 1967 and not 1969. It has the kanji for Rope in the center and that is placed on a subtle but firmly done kanji for STONE - but the kanji is in there ass backwards. The correct rendering is in image 5. Mysteries abound.I have never seen the sub-title SB in a Maki print...

¡°Hokkan ¨C Mountains, Seoul, Korea¡± was published 6 December, 1937. The carver was Maeda; the printer was Honda. It has Paul Jacoulet¡¯s pencil signature and red Tea Jar seal on the lower right corner. It has great color; margins and edges are slightly toned. It is in very good condition.

The strokes in this print are "U", no meaning. This is an early print using Hiragana. It is two brush strokes piercing the space, leaving a trace of itself before coming to the bottom of the paper. It has but one splash across the top and a red tear along the side and then: Whoosh it goes as in the red image at the bottom. There is one sun at the outer edge of the stroke and two moons inside the curving stroke. Not so simple after all.

This original etching is by Francisco de Goya. It is titled, "The Little Prisoner:" (Le Petit Prisonier). In Spanish title is, 'Tan Bárbara la Seguridad como el Delito': (The imprisonment is as barbarous as the crime). It captures and symbolizes Goya's ideas about the human condition and suffering: a poor soul, quite grim. It was first issued in Gazette des Beaux-Arts, vol. XXII, Paris, 1867. It is pre-framed. That actually etching measures 110mm x 85mm (approximately 4 1/8" x 3 1/8"...

In 1966 Haku Maki produced one of his many abstract series. He did Cell and he did Proportion Here I show Proportion 10 the white strokes appear against a beautiful yellow background . Above the strokes is a white Sun. I first saw this print in a small pamphlet from White Lotus Gallery in Oregon, acquired the print in ways that Du Yuesheng would be proud of and it has rested here for over two years It is a small print but it packs a punch. It shows a prancing dancing woman. What do you think? The kanji in the center of the print is set off by a tear at the left and a sun at the right. It measures 5.75” x 8.5”.
