Original 19th century albumen photograph by Jean-Pascal Sebah (1872-1947) depicting the old Cairo and the island of Rhoda (the photograph is titled in the plate l.l "Vieux Caire et Ile de Rowdah"). Signed in the plate l.r. Jean-Pascal Sebah was the son of Pascal Sebah (1823-1886). He continued the family studio in 1888 in Constantinople. The studio specialized in scenes of Egypt and the Middle East.

This colorful print is an early Maki embossed print. It is a quite small print done in a very low run. Only 30 copies were made. Maki started doing 50 copies by 1962. Earlier he may have lacked the confidence to do runs of that size so he did 30 as shown here The three red suns are dramatic, The print is signed in white ink, an early Maki touch. The 3 suns shimmer. The title is in kanji – a rare Maki style. This is Ji hao 31 [Signal 31]...

This is a work by highly regarded American artist THOMAS WILLOUGHBY NASON (1889-1971). Nason was a Boston-born artist who by the late 1920's had taught himself the fine art of creating prints in the wood engraving process.
