This is a 20th century restrike of the 1859 etching "Thames Police" (also known as "Wapping Wharf", by the famous American artist JAMES ABBOTT McNEILL WHISTLER (1834-1903). A hand-colored engraving after William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854), titled "Eastport and Passamaquoddy Bay", 1839, engraved by C. Cousen, printed by George Virtue of London, England. Tiny foreground figures relax on a bluff overlooking the panorama, framed by a feathery tree at right and close-in island. William Bartlett was a well-known artist at the time, his topographical scenes very sought after. They proved popular works for transfer to engravings which could be widely distributed...
