Matt Phillips is a master printmaker who taught in Paris, and at Bard College in NYC. He is credited with reviving the monotype technique in the second half of the 20th century...

This is a fine print on a puckery, soft, Japan-like very delicate paper, the image featuring an obviously Orientalist figure and a greyhound-like dog. The print is after the original 1865 painting by the artist, that painting having been offered at Sotheby's auction in 2009. JEAN LEON GEROME (1824-1904) was a major French academic painter and sculptor and educator of legions of artists in the 19th century in France. ONE OF A NUMBER BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**This is a small etching (the sheet 6 1/4" by 8 1/8", respectably matted but not framed), by the noted California artist HARRIET GENE ROUDEBUSH (1908-1998), titled at lower left margin "View From the Fairmount" and pencil signed at lower right by the artist. The artist depicts a bird's eye view looking east towards the Bay Bridge and Ferry Building, from the top of Nob Hill, on which sits the opulent Fairmount Hotel...

In his book Daniel Tretiak says: “Maki’s kanji prints were normally of one main color against a white or black background. Poem 71-29 below is an exception—and all the more interesting because of it. In this print, Maki has created an abstract Person—the splashes of color show the head, eyes, shoulder, and two legs.” It measures 8.75in W X 12in H and is no. 73 of an edition of 152.
