From our African Collection: Democratic Republic of the Congo Figure, circa 1960s

From our European Collection, a very good 17th century copper plate engraving, most likely English circa 1650-1700, depicting a Chinese official accompanied by his entourage, with subjects kowtowing in the foreground and a crowd of spectators to the rear.

Size and Condition: 7 inches by 5 1/4 inches, very well preserved with only slight creasing.

Beautiful and original oil on paper painting from Field & Stream magazine in the 1940s or early 50s measuring 28 x 20“ Illustrator Arthur Davenport Fuller was born in Exeter, New Hampshire, and educated at Harvard University, the Fenway School of Illustration in Boston, and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Fuller was an ardent sportsman all his life. His hunting and fishing pictures were a natural part of his identity...

The Pensive Shepherdess

This sweet genre painting of a shepherdess with her flock reflects the theme of the child-of-nature, a sensibility embraced by Victorians during the 19th century. The figure’s youth and comely face convey innocence, while her steadfast pose next to the goldenrod suggests that she is at ease in her environment.

From our Fine Arts and Americana Collection, an early Tomasz Rut original oil on canvas masterpiece titled "Musica Stellarum," widely regarded as one of his top paintings of all time.

We were fortunate to meet Tomasz in the early 1990's when he was nary as famous as he is now, and were doubly fortunate to subsequently acquire two of his early original works, both of which are now considered to be two of the best he has ever created...

Arthur Heintzelman, American, 1891-1965, drypoint etching, "Convalescence", image size: 12 x 9 1/4 inches, 1926, cat. Smith-128, edition of 80, pencil signed lower right. Heintzelman's skill captures this tender moment between a mother and child. A fine impression with ample margins. Provenance: Baldwin-Wallace College.

“Buyongjeong Puvilion-부용정at Changdeokgung Place-창덕궁 ” Korea, early 20th century, artist anonymous, with a patinated old floral carved wood frame. Painted with a large old Korean traditional pavilion named ““Buyongjeong” written on a ractantular white panel in black ink near a small pavilion in front of a large lotus pond, painted on canvas in oil. It’s in good condition, 59cm x 49cm painting only, 72.5cm x 62.5cm overall...

In the tradition of Victorian rose paintings of the late 19th and early 20th century, here is an unframed work, canvas laid on board, 11 1/2" by 21 1/2", signed at lower right "IDMAY". The painting likely dates to the early years of the 20th century, a time when young girls were encouraged to take up the "ladylike" skill of flower painting. "IDMAY" might have been Ida Mae----one of these young ladies. Our artist was of average skill, but her handiwork has outlived her...

Original etching by Alfred Hutty (USA, SC, 1877-1954). This work is titled "St. Michael's in Sunlight" and dates from 1933. Signed in pencil l.r. and with the snail cypher. In excellent condition. Provenance: Childs Gallery Boston.

Beautifully executed by an unknown but obviously talented artist is this 10" by 8" oil on canvas of a seated woman draped in fabric, against a darker drape background. The work is contemporary. It was found unframed and for illustration purposes I have "married" it to a frame that somewhat fits it, however, the frame is marginally unsuitable because it is a bit shallow for an oil painting's stretcher...

Signed at lower right "PURWADI" and dated just above it 1998, this is a 17" by 14 1/4" work on heavy paper or paper laid on heavy paper, unframed, the subject two Asian women identically dressed, viewed from behind, carrying a heavy load on their heads. This Indonesian contemporary work is by the young, new generation artist DIYANO PURWADI (1971-). Purwadi was born in East Java and schooled there in art. By 1993 he was in Bali, where he now works from the art center town, Ubud...

Tavik Frantisek Simon, Czech, 1877-1942, "Quai Voltaire au Printemps". This sunny Paris street scene was created in 1914 by Czechoslovakian artist Tavik Frantisek Simon. Soft ground etching and aquatint, image size 12 7/8 x 14 5/8 inches, pencil signed, edition of probably 250, cat: Novak 225.

An oil on canvasboard painting of the California desert, painted in unusually pastel-y color palette, signed at lower left by artist Alzira Maria. The piece, 22" by 28" (28" by 34" framed) features an almost Cubist handling in the distant mountains, reminding of artists such as Andrew Dasburg. The painting is clean and wall-ready. Frame is attractive distressed wood style, and liner and gold fillet are in good condition.

By the celebrated and increasingly sought-after Wisconsin-associated artist LUCIA STERN (1895-1987), this is a fine modernist collage of actual threads of various colors criss-crossing a painting on canvas that is primarily in silver paint, with painted dots, circles rectangles and other geometric forms completing the composition, which measures 17" by 14" plus attractive narrow blond wood frame (no glass)...

THIRTEEN prints in total, varying in size, the largest (the set of ten) measuring 12 1/2" by 9 3/4", TWO initialed in pencil in the margins by the noted Ukrainian-born, French artist SONIA DELAUNAY (1885-1979). Ten of the prints are from the 1930 set of approximately 40 stencils "Compositions/Couleurs/Idees" published by Editions d'Art Charles Moreau. Two of those are initialed "S.D." in pencil by the artist at lower right...
