In The Life and Works of Haku Maki I refer fairly briefly to his Big Reds and other large prints of the late 1960s and early 1970s. In this Research Note I present a more thorough compendium of this type of image and commentary. If any readers know of an image which should be in this Note, please let me know. In the late 1970s, ceramics became an important concentration for Maki’s artistic creations. As ceramic objects are central to Japanese culture, he didn’t have to look far for inspiration. He did many fine examples and the texture of each item is always striking. This tan bowl was created in 1979. Collection 19 was number 12 of 205 and it measures 9.5inW x 10.5inH. It is embossed and in good condition.

Please read the research note in frame 12 of the photos. There apparently was some misnumbering--there is no Note 13.

Max Kassler, American 1905–1992 was an abstract Artist known for some of the most unusual experimental work based on the human figure He was an early student of the Picasso school of painting. This work culminated his idea of abstraction in space. This is part of the collection we have at the gallery. Alexander Ney Russian American contemporary sculptor" Animal Bead" this seems to be intended to be strung since the hole in the mouth goes all the way through, with the others in the collection in silver this seems like it was a attempt to make jewelry art. The artist initialed this piece "N 1" in his usual incised way. Size l nearly 2.75"" by 1.25" high. This is from a very rare group of early miniature pieces most all were initialed in this way...

This is a surprisingly good kanji It was done in 1972,slightly beyond Haku Maki's core period for such small kanji. It is the character for Mu or Nothing It is a very abstract depiction of the character, more so than most of Maki’s rendering of Nothing, which he did many times. This image is sharp and concise and it has drive. It has the Maki style and balance:a seal and the bottom margin. The seal at the right is balanced off by the splash at the left
