Smith was born in Lisbon, moved to Paris while young, and became a French citizen in 1911...

An accomplished, very western American pastel drawing on paper of a frontiersman, (11" by 9", and 15 1/4" by 13 3/4" as simply framed), signed at lower right "Lea" and with copyright symbol. I sent images to the Tom Lea (1907-2001) Institute in El Paso, Texas, thinking this may be by that well-known artist but they responded that it is not. Therefore, it is offered as simply a nice drawing with a lot of western appeal. Likely date of execution circa 1970's or 1980's.

20th Century American School 1900-1999 American Artists This is the third watercolor and gouache painting that we recently acquired. All park scenes, all painted on a blue toned paper, nicely framed with archival materials. We are unsure who this artist was, most likely one of the mid 1930's American Illustrators. The image measures 8 1/4X5 1/4 inches. Unexamined out of the frame. Probably a view in Central Park N.Y.

A late 19th century etching of a young woman, measuring 5 3/4" by 4" inside the mat, the laid paper sheet 10" by 7 1/4", and 19 1/4" by 15 1/2" nicely framed, with a monogram in the plate at right center and an illegible pencil signature at lower right that appears to begin with "J". As the work somewhat resembles some portrait etchings by the famous artist Whistler, and the monogram almost appears as an early Whistlerian "butterfly" before it evolved, I thought the work possibly by Whistler...

This fine and decorative picture is in a Victorian Aesthetic 13-1/2 x 11-1/4" wood frame with the original panel back and it is mounted on a mat. A German, he located in Venice where he carried on a considerable business as a print seller...

Antique miniature portrait painting, depicting a beautiful lady in sitting position dressed in 19th century style gown. The portrait has a diameter of 2 1/4 inches mounted in a metallic frame, housed in a square brownish wooden frame with dimension of 4.75 inches. Etching of a Florida river landscape, titled at lower left margin "Peace on the Anclote", (actually misspelled on the reverse side official label as "Amelote"), and pencil signed at lower right and dated '37 by listed artist WALTER RONALD LOCKE (1883-1949). The Anclote river is just north of the Tarpon Springs area on Florida's Gulf coast. Locke was born near Boston and passed away in the Tampa Bay area of Florida...

When I first saw this piece, it screamed to me "Picasso". The 11 1/2" by 7 1/2" work is not signed, but the style, the slight glaze on the baked clay surface, the decoration, is suggestive of the ceramic Madoura works of Picasso. The item weighs just shy of three pounds. Condition is excellent.

Naive, or slightly primitive, almost folk art painting of clapboard 19th century style buildings next to an inlet of the sea, signed at lower right by artist Martha Crosmer. I see a listing for an artist by that name, born 1909, deceased 1995, last known address in Monrovia in Southern California, with earlier roots to Montana, but this painting does not resemble the desert plein air works that artist apparently painted...

Oil on canvas classic landscape with feathery trees, rolling clouds and distant view, 28" by 38" (34" by 44" as framed), signed at lower left by English-American artist A. SPENCER (Andrew Spencer, born 1896), and titled on stretcher "A Berkshire Landscape". The artist has frequently been misidentified (often said to be one "Augustus Spencer" on AskArt and in auction records)...

Original woodcut circa 1930's, the subject a man working machinery in an urban setting with high rise buildings, stamped at lower right margin with the estate stamp of American artist IRVING GEORGE LEHMAN (1900-1983). The work is unframed and currently housed in a mat, and is taped at extreme top edge in two places, to that mat. There is a roughly rectangular pressed-in area of the paper at lower left and some wrinkling of the extremely delicate thin paper at bottom...

This is an eighteenth century English drawing, 10 1/2" by 15" including the mat details drawn by the artist, plus 1 1/2" wide old gold frame, the subject two men fishing on a pond, a house in the distance and trees framing this idyllic scene of Olde England, signed near the figures "I Burford" (or, Barford possibly) and dated there 1742 or possibly 1792. I do not see an artist listing that would correspond with this...

The artist was born in Russia, his father a local artist. The young man showed early talent and he was accepted into the Imperial Art Academy on scholarship...

An interesting marriage of Japanese kirigami or "kirie" art, (paper intricately cut to a lace-like appearance, that finished work, in this example, a crane standing in water, and surrounded by pine trees) and a circa 1885 American Eastlake style gold and black frame. The paper art measures 5 1/2" by 5", and the entire framed piece 15" by 13 1/2". The kirigami has been laid against a green-blue crushed velvet type surface, creating an interesting effect...
