Max Kassler, American 1905–1993 was an abstract Artist known for some of the most unusual experimental work based on the human figure He was an early student of the Picasso school of painting. This work culminated his idea of abstraction in space. This is part of the collection we have at the gallery. Japanese sosaku hanga “kappa-ban” (stencil print) by Yoshitoshi Mori (1898-1992) depicting Zenzoji Temple in Asakusa, Tokyo. The print is pencil-signed “Yoshitoshi Mori” at the lower right. The artist’s red seal is above the signature. The paper measures 16 3/8”V x 12 1/4”H and dates circa 1980s. This print has never been framed and is in very good overall condition.

Original etching LA REVUE (The Review) by Jacques Callot printed in 1627, second state of two, Lieure catalog number 592. The print was done just before Callot started working on a huge print “Le Siege de Breda” and must have been done for better understanding of military formations. A striking watercolor and gouache painting of a black cat lounging amidst lily family garden flowers, 8 1/2" by 13 1/4" (18" by 22" as framed), signed at lower left by the noted New Mexico-associated artist AGNES GABRIELLE TAIT (1894-1981). Cats were a favorite subject of the artist, and collectors seek out those works specifically. Tait was born in New York City, and studied art there and in Europe (especially lithography)...

This is a charming scene of an earlier California, the iconic subject being the 18th century Mission Santa Barbara. Note the figure curled up on the steps, the leaning palm, and the beautifully painted eucalyptus leaves. The overall light palette reminds one of C. W. Nicholson's works or possibly Dana Bartlett...

An extensive landscape with picturesque castle ruins at left on a leafy Arcadian glen overlooking a lake and distant mountains, unsigned, 16" by 24" (25" by 32 1/2" in wide gold frame), presenting at first a Hudson River School appearance, but perhaps more likely by an English or Scottish artist, or by a period American artist imitating an English style and scenery. Jasper Francis Cropsey painted similarly (but I am not suggesting that this is his work)...

Oil on canvas painting by Haitian artist J.B. Gaston, 12 1/2" by 16", unframed, the subject a colorful tropical village among palms, numerous figures going about their regular activities. This work is squarely within the classic style of art we have come to expect from Haiti. It is not an old work but continues a tradition of Haitian art going back to the 1940's. Excellent condition. Circa 1970 oil on canvas, 16" by 12" (20 1/2" by 16 1/4" framed), signed at lower left "Joyce". The scene with yellow roses and oriental ceramic figure takes after artists such as Hovsep Pushman and others who in the first half of the 20th century favored such props in their still life works. This is evenly soiled, with some browned varnish too. Otherwise condition is good. The white frame shows some wear.
