This is an image of a young African-American boy grinning while leaning against a building, the image mounted on a board signed by the photographer, Arthur S. Little. After googling the name I find that around the late 'teens and early twenties, there was a photographer in Los Angeles and Ventura by that name, though he does not seem to have had a high profile. I do not believe that this is an original photograph. The item is in good condition...

Beautifully executed, fresh watercolor and gouache painting of tiny figures overpowered by steep coastal cliffs, 9 1/2" by 21 1/2" (16" by 28" framed), signed at lower right "L LEWIS" and dated "96". This is a work by the listed English watercolor artist LENNARD LEWIS (1826-1913). The piece is exceptionally fresh considering that it was created more than 115 years ago. Colors are bright and the paper in excellent condition...

Watercolor on paper painting, 9 1/2" by 17 1/2" inside the mat, 16" by 28" as framed, titled at lower right "AT DITTISHAM R. DART", signed at left by the nineteenth century English painter who is known apparently only by the signature "F. Walters". The artist painted in many parts of England. This scene is near Dartmouth in southwestern England not far from Plymouth. I would judge the age of the picture as circa 1870...

Plate signed etching, 13" by 10 1/4" inside the mat, the sheet 16" by 13 3/4", titled "Rue de la Glaciere", 1937, by the famous and important French modern artist MAURICE de VLAMINCK (1876-1958). The original edition is given as 400 or 500 examples; later restrikes might exist. I do not know if this might be one of them. The paper is very thin and delicate and appears ribbed as would laid style paper. I do not see any watermarks...

She was born in Nanjing and educated in Chongqing during the time of the Sino-Japanese War (1930's). Oil on canvas painting of surf breaking on coastal rocks, 24" by 30" (29" by 35 1/2" framed), signed at lower right by the noted California painter GEORGE SANDERS BICKERSTAFF (1893-1954). Bickerstaff is a familiar name in California plein air art. He was a prolific artist, creating both landscapes of desert and eucalyptus and lupine, as well as seascape. This example probably dates to the late 1940's or early 1950's. It is in very good condition with only a pinpoint loss or two.

Watercolor on paper painting of a tree on a bluff by a sandy shore of an estuary or lake, 5 1/2" by 3 1/2" (8 1/2" by 7" in attractive gilt frame), signed at lower left by the noted French 19th century painter, GEORGES BECKER (c. 1845-1909). Becker apparently did not leave behind too many works, but those that have survived leave little doubt as to the talents he possessed...

This is a perhaps circa 1930's or 1940's work in an earlier naive style, with a fisherman, sailing craft, and cabin on the shore. On canvas, simply tacked to the frame on the reverse side, the piece measures 21" by 30 1/2". I imagine this could be called "cabin art". If you're looking for a primitive piece for a country home, or even your urban home, consider this charming work...

(ONE OF TWO EXAMPLES BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**), gouache on paper, (12 3/4" by 6 3/4"), and 1 1/2" wide frame, signed boldly at lower left by the well listed Italian artist GIOVANNI BATTISTA (1858-1925). This is a panoramic coastal scene, a common subject of the artist, who painted mostly scenes of Naples, Venice, the Amalfi coast, and Vesuvius. The painting is in excellent, fresh condition. Works by Battista are offered regularly at auction, where they can bring into the thousands.

Lithograph on paper, unframed, the sheet 13 3/4" by 17 3/4", pencil signed at lower left and dated there 1949, and signed again in Hebrew and dated 1949 at lower right in pencil, by the noted Russian-born Israeli artist MIRON SIMA (1902-1999). According to a Wikipedia listing, Sima was born in Czarist Russia shtetl in 1902. By 1921 he was in Odessa, Russia for art study, and the following year saw him in Dresden, Germany...

Circa 1940's vintage period original lithograph print of the famous Alamo fort in San Antonio, Texas, pencil signed in the margin at lower right and dedicated "To Sally & Stan--M. Crittenden", and titled at lower left "The Alamo". The work measures 12 1/2" by 9 3/4" inside the mat, and 18 1/2" by 15 1/4" as framed. This is a folky painting of someone's favorite St. Bernard dog, circa 1870's or 1880's (ONE OF TWO SUCH WORKS IN MY SHOP). Measuring 21" by 16" on the original very old stretchers and 12 1/2" by 12 1/2" (and 17 1/2" by 17 1/2" as framed), the painting is a sweet and classic rendition of a treasured pet of the Victorian era.
