Japanese Nineteenth Century Carved Sculpture of a Deity Measuring 18 inch in height

The photo on the left shows a double portrait by John Singer Sargent of Mr. John White Field and his wife. This painting was done in the early 1880's and is in the collection of Pennyslvania Academy of Fine Arts. The image on the right shows an earlier portrait of Mr. Field by Sargent. Notice Mr. Field is blind in his left eye, which is enlarged and his right eye is focused which is a good eye. It is my opinion that Mr. Field rejected the first portrait of himself done by Sargent...

One of a number of Whistler lithographs I am offering: "Firelight: Joseph Pennell No. 1", 1896, sheet approximately measuring 13 3/4" by 10 1/4", currently in a mat, taped at top edge, though not laid down, unframed. Generally clean, with some imperfections along edges. Whistler created some 179 lithographs in his career, in addition to more graphic art as etchings, along with paintings, pastels, and watercolor...

Three drawings in pencil on gray-blue paper, each 7 1/2" by 12" approximately inside the mat, all of coastal scenes with multiple figures, sailing ships and even dogs and donkeys. Two are signed with the "W C" initials and are dated Nov. 1866; the third one with conjoined initials is titled "Falmouth" (a city in Cornwall, on the southwest coast of England) and is dated 12 June 1867...

This pastoral scene depicts sheep in a mountainous area, causing me to believe that it may be European in origin. The artist has captured 6 sheep peacefully grazing on grass, with no shepherd seen. The serenity is enhanced by the calming green of the grass and the blues of the sky and distant mountain. The linen on canvas is mounted on board, and framed under glass in what I believe is a refurbished frame which is generally in excellent condition...

Charles Adams Platt, American, 1861-1933, "Canal Boats and Tugs", etching, image size 4 1/4 x 6 7/8 inches, 1887, cat: Rice-85, plate signed and dated. A rich impression in sepia ink.

This is an antique 19th-century Russian oil painting on a metal panel, possibly iron. The painting is titled “Russian Peasant Conversation at the Front of the Cottage.” It portrays a scene where two Russian peasants converse at the front of a lodge. Two boys are also present in the painting, attentively listening to the conversation. The attire of the peasants is typical of Russian clothing.

Drawing on paper, 6 1/2" by 9 1/4" the scene only, 9 1/2" by 12 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right, followed by "fec. 1818" (abbreviation of the Latin word "fecit", meaning "executed", in that year). Try as I might, I cannot make out the name. I've tried Pfohl, Pfahl, Pigott, and so on. In any event, here's a drawing that has survived in excellent condition after nearly 200 years...

Lithograph with hand coloring and gum arabic highlighting in the leaves, from the Imperial folio quadrupeds series circa 1848, plate number 144, depicting three species of mole-like rats (Townsend's Arvicola, the sharp-nosed Arvicola, and the bank rat), by the important American naturalist artist and lithographer JOHN JAMES AUDUBON (1785-1851). Audubon was assisted by his son John Woodhouse Audubon, and the printing was by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia...

From our European Collection, a fine 19th century original oil on panel by British painter and listed artist William Anslow Thornley (1857-1898), entitled "Moonlight on the Thames." Signed "Thornley" lower left.

Size and condition: 13 inches x 11 inches framed dimensions, approximately 10 inches x 8 inches unframed image size. This painting has been taken care of well, there is only some very minor age-related soiling and minor scuffing to the frame.

“Cottage Entrance” By Artist Alfred Huntley Graphite Drawing signed 18x21” done in the mater of Whistler circa 1890

A charming little drawing, exceptionally well-traveled, and with a story to tell: pencil on paper, 6 1/2" by 9 3/4" inside the present mat opening, 12 1/2" by 15 3/8" as framed, not signed, but with inscription "Cesanne Aug. 13/74" at lower right, and "copper buckets" at lower left. And, on the backing, written in a modern hand: "Purchased at Kingston, Jamaica Municipal Art Museum/The date is 1874--purchased previous to 1974. Probably a sketch of town fountain in rural France...

A highly detailed nineteenth century PENCIL DRAWING, NOT A PRINT, featuring a classic turreted castle, with numerous (approximately twenty) figures completing the scene, unframed, 7" by 9 1/8". The artist signed at lower left corner "F. Pohl", and "1846" is written on the reverse. Nearby are two blue stamps that could be collector stamps. Condition is excellent, needs a frame.
