A most unusual and interesting DOUBLE-SIDED pencil drawing on wove paper, one side featuring an indian in headdress snatching a child off the shore, a tiny fenced white settlement visible in the upper left corner; the other side features a white man in frontier clothing holding his rifle as a native brave swings his tomahawk. Both sides are signed "E Thompson artist". I am not aware of a known artist by this name so this will rest squarely in the folk art or historical categories...

This is a matching PAIR of prints, one of shorebirds like snipe, the other of partridge-type fowl, each print measuring 13 1/2" by 19 1/2" inside the mat (18 1/2" by 23 1/2" as framed), both by ALEXANDER POPE, JR. (1849-1924), a noted American artist from Boston who is known for his Harnett style trompe l'oeil paintings of harvested wild birds, and sporting and wildlife art. Pope was from an upper class background, and he had a lot of time to paint...

A charming small painting of a cold winter day in the country, a lone woman braving the elements with her cane, in front of a modest cottage doing its best against the harsh elements. Some smoke comes from the chimney as a hint of warmth in an otherwise bleak scene. Measurements as framed are 9" by 13 1/2". There is no signature. The reverse shows this is painted on a circa 1870's gray English art board from a London supply house...
