A beautiful pencil drawing of human hands, likely 19th century, measuring 4 1/2" by 5 1/2" inside the ornate French mat, 10 1/4" by 11 1/4" as framed in gilt closed corner framing. There is a little wear in the corners of the frame but the overall look with mat and frame is upscale...

This is a work squarely in the Hudson River style by a talented landscape artist of the second half of the century, DANIEL CHARLES GROSE (1838-1900). The scene is a significant river winding among steep green bluffs, a feathery tree at left, the only sign of the hand of man a split rail fence. Signed at lower left and dated there 1874, the work measures 8" by 12" (12 3/4" by 17" in its original attractive old gilded frame)...

A 19th century American folk art painting. Oil on canvas. Table top still life of bountiful agricultural harvest and a pineapple likely from port trade (pineapples were popular import produce in 19th century port cities and much can be read of pineapples in American tradition and design - most notably relating to hospitality.) Relined - otherwise good, clean and bright condition. Stretcher dimensions 30 1/2 inches x 25 1/4 inches...

Three drawings in pencil on gray-blue paper, each 7 1/2" by 12" approximately inside the mat, all of coastal scenes with multiple figures, sailing ships and even dogs and donkeys. Two are signed with the "W C" initials and are dated Nov. 1866; the third one with conjoined initials is titled "Falmouth" (a city in Cornwall, on the southwest coast of England) and is dated 12 June 1867...

19th Century hand carved wooden disciple praying, origin: Burma, both ears show some damage and left shoulder has a chip, otherwise very nice specimen with good patina. Size: H. 17cm x W. 6.5 cm x D. 7cm

Drawing on paper, 6 1/2" by 9 1/4" the scene only, 9 1/2" by 12 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right, followed by "fec. 1818" (abbreviation of the Latin word "fecit", meaning "executed", in that year). Try as I might, I cannot make out the name. I've tried Pfohl, Pfahl, Pigott, and so on. In any event, here's a drawing that has survived in excellent condition after nearly 200 years...

A charming little drawing, exceptionally well-traveled, and with a story to tell: pencil on paper, 6 1/2" by 9 3/4" inside the present mat opening, 12 1/2" by 15 3/8" as framed, not signed, but with inscription "Cesanne Aug. 13/74" at lower right, and "copper buckets" at lower left. And, on the backing, written in a modern hand: "Purchased at Kingston, Jamaica Municipal Art Museum/The date is 1874--purchased previous to 1974. Probably a sketch of town fountain in rural France...

Oil on canvas laid on board, 21" by 34" (26" by 39" as framed), unsigned, circa 1880 I would guess, the painting consisting of a classic Hudson River view with steep hills bordering a river, a boat completing the scenery. There is a very nice luminosity to this particular example, a very nice handling of the light in the leaves of the trees. The painting has an approximately 5" long horizontal old cut in lower portion as shown, not unusual for a work of this age...

A highly detailed nineteenth century PENCIL DRAWING, NOT A PRINT, featuring a classic turreted castle, with numerous (approximately twenty) figures completing the scene, unframed, 7" by 9 1/8". The artist signed at lower left corner "F. Pohl", and "1846" is written on the reverse. Nearby are two blue stamps that could be collector stamps. Condition is excellent, needs a frame.

A refined old drawing titled "Caterskill Clove" dated Oct. 7, 1859, the subject a famed rocky gorge in the eastern part of the Catskill mountains of New York State (google "Catskill Clove" for full information on this renowned scenic area). The work is apparently unsigned. There are any number of listed artists of the Hudson River School who could have created the drawing; Sanford Robinson Gifford, William Hart, Asher Durand and many others of note painted in the area...

Pencil on paper study of a man, signed at lower left with initials M.A.K., mid 19th century, by the noted Dutch landscapist and member of the important artistic Koekkoek family, MARINUS ADRIANUS KOEKKOEK (1807-1870). He was the son of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek and brother of Barend Cornelis and Hermanus Koekkoek. This particular work was likely a sketch made by the artist as he worked out a particular artistic situation for a painting...

Pastel on paper on board, of grapes and an apple on the ground, 11 7/8" by 9 3/4" and a simple narrow frame, unsigned, but very likely by noted mid 19th century American artist JOHN S. BOWER, known today primarily for his very distinctive studies of fruit in a landscape. See my shop for several other works by this artist, some of which are signed. A number of works by him have passed through the Skinner auction house in Boston over the years, placed in Americana and folk art sales...

A beautiful drawing of the year 1878, featuring a number of women and a solitary man, most apparently gossiping at a picnic or other outdoor social meeting in a wooded setting, the place given as "Lake George". The famous upstate lake features in many an American painting of the period, and it was frequented by many notable artists of the time. Given the skill shown in our drawing, the artist was likely one of these notables, perhaps even one of the Hudson River greats...
