A striking hand carved sculpture of a female, likely mid to late 20th century, measuring approximately 17 3/4" in height and 6" in width. When you look at the work, it is easy to see how Picasso, Vlaminck, Derain and Matisse were so influenced by African sculpture. The face and profile of the head are classic; they remind of the haunting, brooding, mysterious, giant stone figures of remote Easter Island in the Pacific.

There is the official original label in black and white on the bottom, with "Canada Eskimo Art" and an image of a stylized igloo. These carvings are often signed in syllabics or in English lettering but I do not see any such signature on this piece. There are no chips, nor cracks...

The bark appears to have been laid on a thin board. This 20th century work was likely brought back to the US in the 1960's by a tourist, as decorative ethnographic art.
