This bag looks like it's made of bakelite, but it doesn't test as such. I went and learned a lot about early plastics from Andrea DeNoto's book, " Art Plastic," and the best I can come up with is Thermoset Phenolic Resin. That said, whatever the material, this is an extraordinary bag in extraordinary condition.

This stylish basket weave purse was quite the rage during the 1950s when Dorset Rex marketed this patented purse during the Eisenhower years. The patent was actually issued in late 1949, after which a wide range of purses entered the market. The Dorset Rex tag tells us that the purse was made after 1951, thus we date it c. 1955.
This purse is gold with reddish-brown, possibly deep mauve, lucite top which closes with an S-hooked clasp. The horse shoe handle rotates freely on pins...
Great resource. Unstated first edition paperback published by Harmony House in 1975. The cover shows some wear... an area in the corner probably had a label ( it's sticky)..otherwise this highly collectible book is in fine condition.
