A beautiful Shino Chawan by one of the best Japanese artists of the 20th century, Yano Keisen, made 70 years ago. His ceramics were part of the wedding of the Japanese Emperor Akihito in 1959 and since then part of the imperial household.

It comes with its originally signed and sealed wooden box without chips or cracks.

Vintage Japanese uchikake (wedding kimono) crafted from heavy woven and embroidered silk brocade fabric with extensive gilt thread in a dense pattern of flowers and peacocks. Mid-20th century. The lining is fine red silk. Very good overall condition with only minor wear at the bottom corners where the lining meets the brocade. Measures about 73" in length by about 50" across. The artists's red seal is at the lower left and the print is pencil-signed in the lower right margin. Early edition likely dating from the 1950s/60s. Paper size: 15 1/2" x 10 7/8" (image: 14 3/8" x 9 5/8"). Very good overall condition. The back margin edge is very lightly distressed. The original 14,000 yen price is in pencil on the back lower right edge.

Here we have a very unique ceremonial tea implement made by one of the most important figures from Japanese tea culture in the past century. While most tea scoops (chashaku) are made of bamboo, this piece is fashioned from the branch of a plum tree and retains part of the bark on the handle...

This is a wonderful vintage Japanese Raku style tea cup of Ohi ware, which was made about 50-60 years ago. The seal of 'Ohi' is stamped on the bottom. This tea cup has an amazing amber glaze.

The original wooden box is also included.

Ohi ware has become well known for its use of Ame-gusuri, or amber glaze. Being a Raku style, it was low-fired and is quite light and soft in the hands...

Modern Hagi Chawan By Miwa Kyusetsu X (Kyuwa) (1885-1981)

The rough white Hagi clay with fairly big enclosures is expertly thrown into half cylinder shape (hanzutsu); The light feldspatic hagi glaze turning to yellow beige; inside the foot ring stamped Kyusetsu.

Many of Miwa's chawan have a split cross footring called a warekodai that was favored by busho chajin (warrior tea men); it traces its origins to Korean chawan...

Here is the only Onta Chawan of our collection: a rare and beautiful chawan of Onta ware, made in 1958 (the manufacting year is written on the originally signed wooden box).

The production dates back to the early 18th century. Onta ware is closely associated with Mingei folk art. The earth for the pottery is found in Onta in the mountains. It normally comes in the form of rocks and needs to be ground to a pulver...
