From our Southeast Asia Collection, a superb Indonesian ebony wood carving of Ruana, expertly rendered with such animation and ferocity that the character looks almost demon-like, so much so that we actually find this particular piece a bit creepy.....But that is ultimately testimony to the tremendous skill of the carver...
A very attractive SUKKOTHAI BRONZE BUDDHA, late 19/20th Century. Very nice spiritual presence/aura, has a very serene expression, downcast eyes and the "Ohm" flame on the forehead. Beautiful curled hair and a flame finial. Position: Thursday, in deep meditation.

From our Southeast Asia Collection, a fine and very large Khmer (Cambodian) handmade silk textile now framed as a wall hanging, executed in traditional Khmer palette using a combination of natural vegetal dyes and synthetic colors, depicting various animal and geometric motifs. A very striking and dramatic piece not commonly encountered.
Size and Condition: 94 1/2 inches wide, 40 1/2 inches tall. Some minor thread pulls here and there but overall excellent condition.

Circa 1980, Philippines woven reed and bamboo storage basket crafted by the Ifugao people of the Luzon Cordillera range in the Philippines. Known for their craftsmanship in basketry both Ifugao men and women engage in basket making. Created for everyday use, head baskets like this were used in the fields to collect rice or sweet potatoes and then to store, keeping perishables dry. In excellent condition, it measures 13.5" square by 6" high.
Large vintage “bush knife” from Lanna Thailand, this is an all purpose tool with a thick spine and very sharp edge- quite heavy as well. The blade is fixed with a steel collar and woven rattan and comes with a bamboo basket type sheath. Total L: 54cm/22.2in (blade L: 29cm/11.5in and handle L: 25cm/10.5in). This is an artisanal village made piece and not mass produced.

Wayang topeng mask, finely carved in wood to represent a typical character of that theater, with strong features, painted in polychrome colours to underline some areas. Animal hair was affixed to the mask to represent the hair and the moustache of the character. A wood bar was affixed to the inside of the mask, probably to allow the bearer to hold the mask with his teeth as is done sometimes. An inscription made by its former owner indicates the origin of the mask...
Set of two bronze Thai sculptures portraying a similar look to a pair usually seen in Thai temples of Buddha's main disciples, Ananda and Mahakasyapa. The one with hands held together is often the style seen for the image of Ananda and the other, interestingly enough, is holding a flower which represents a famous parable when the Buddha silently picked a flower and smiled, Mahakasyapa too silently smiled marking the transmission of the dharma...
Women’s skirt from the Bahnar (Ba Na) ethnic group from the Central Highlands of Vietnam, woven from fine handspun cotton using all natural dyes. The weaving is very intricate and refined, note the use of narrow warp ikat bands throughout this piece. This is one single panel which would have used to make three other skirts. See last enlargement for a complete example. L: 2.9meter/9.5feet and W: 66cm/26in. I have two complete skirts- please contact if interested.

The Hmong women of Thailand would decorate their jackets with small rectangles of ornately embroidered collars. This collection of 6 such collars represents the tiny intricate stitches and range of techniques which use to be used. Collars such as these are rarely available on the market mow.
Collars range from 5.5 to 6 inches across and 3inches to 3.5 inches long.
Square Philippine Ifugao basket with cover, known as a hu'up, used at meal time for steamed rice by the Ifugaos. Purchased in the Cordillera Region of Luzon island in the mid 1980s. Age of basket not known, but probably mid-century. 11.5"x 11.5"x 5" in height. In overall good condition.
