Unusual architectural element, carved in the form of a smiling man standing on the head of a water buffalo ("carabao"). This element was part of the decoration inside a house. Wood, semi glossy patina. Indonesia, Flores Island, mid 20th century. Height: 44 cm. The element is nicely mounted on a custom stand. Very good condition despite some remnants of insect infestation (no danger).

A vintage Japanese Ranma (transom) made of Kusunoki (Camphor) and Hinoki (Cypress) woods. Hand carved in deep relief depicting an auspicious Plum Blossom Tree with Bamboo and Irises. Celebrating the change of seasons from winter to spring, it shows many flower buds ready to bloom with a few blooming in all its beauty.

Age: Late Taisho through Early Showa Era (1926-1950).

This ivory carving of a fairy riding a mythical beast is a mid 20th century product. It is 5 ½” high (6 ½” high with carved fitted wood base), 4” wide and 1 ½” thick. It depicts the fairy, He Xiangu, holding a lotus leaf and blossoms in one hand and a fly whisk in the other hand. She is sitting side ways on her mythical beast. This well carved ivory incense burner with hard wood fitted base is a mid 20th century product. It is 5 1/8” high (with base is 6 ¼” high), 4” wide and 2 ¼” thick. Two dragons with clouds are carved on the body and a big dragon is carved on the cover. The handles with loose rings are carved into dragon forms as well. The three legs are carved as animal claws. Pair of cylinder cases, thinly potted with narrow necks and feet painted in mirror image with birds perched among flowering prunus plants. Accented red hand drawn borders at the rims and base of each vase with a poem on the opposite side.

On the base of each is a red overglaze seal of Liu Yucen.

Condition: On one of the vases, there is the remnants of a Jianding export seal. Next to this seal is a glaze crack, most likely from trying to remove the seal...
