This folky Sampler Quilt has a great combination of traditional and original blocks. Nothing could be more traditional than the center Schoolhouse done with nicely inked detail. Below it is a Bear's Paw signed "Fannie J. Gould March 24, 1892". While the top was certainly made in the 19th century, the backing is later. It seems to be from the 1950's. The quilt is in excellent condition. Measurements are 76" x 78"; New England origin.

This is an extraordinary, bold and original interpretation of a Honeycomb, or Hexagon pattern quilt. Graceful wreaths and vining borders are brilliantly offset against the dominant central pattern. Illustrated in The Quilt Engagement Calendar when I last owned it: I have recently re-purchased it from a collection. Very well pieced and appliqued. Finely cross hatch quilted. Unwashed condition; several area of light discoloration are visible in thumbnail photos...

Embroidered in the blocks of this unique crib quilt is the following message: Your childhood years, they will soon be over And your school days, then all will be... May health, wealth and happiness be your lot As long as your life shall last. Your Grandma has made this spread for your feet And decked it with colors all bright And when you are warmly tucked into your bed Then think of your Grandma - Good night. Harriet S...

Alphabet quilts are a rare breed. When attempted, the maker often has difficulty getting the 26 letters to be placed symmetrically but the creator of this quilt found a good solution. She created star like blocks for the top and bottom corners making it all come out even. There is a quirky element, though, in that only the letter J has a period after it. What could that represent? This quilt is in pristine condition. It has been professionally laundered. It is from Pennsylvania; circa 1920's...

This Princess Feather (aka Prince's Feather) quilt has two particularly unusual features. The central motif as well as the centers of the feathers are all stuffed applique. Four hearts surround the very center motif. Yellow within the stuffed work appliques really makes them pop. The other especially distinctive feature is that the feathers terminate in unusual pointed shapes. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. It is nicely quilted with a variety of patterns...

This exuberant Pots of Flowers Quilt is finely quilted and appliqued. It is dated 1876 in quilting with initials EG. Abutting hearts in the center are a lovely design but the star they form makes it even more special. The center design is surrounded by a quilted wreath. Partial wreaths are throughout the body of the quilt. Flower buds in the pots are repeated in the border to make it all a perfectly unified design. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in mint condition...

This is an early version of a Flying Geese quilt made with beautiful combined, richly colored printed fabrics and a glazed chintz border. It is in excellent, unwashed condition so the chintz fully retains its glaze. The border is quilted with concentric arcs and the body with diamonds. There are several spots on the reverse but they do not show on the front. The quilt measures 82" x 86". It is from Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania (Montgomery County); circa 1850.

This is one of the most dramatic examples of a Swirling Pinwheel (aka Rising Sun or Wheel of Life) quilt that I have seen. The use of solid red and green punctuated by orange centers gives it real drama. The rows of diamonds around the Pinwheels add to the pulsating quality. LeMoyne Stars are another fine element. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. There are some slight irregularities in the green which is probably a home dyed fabric and somewhat fugitive...

This glazed chintz Wholecloth quilt is as crisp as the day it was made some 160 years ago. It was certainly packed away and did not see the light of day. The printed fabric consists of rows of floral bouquets. It is probably English. It is unusual that such an elegant front has a very plain cotton backing. It is quilted with chevron patterns throughout. The quilt measures 96" x 98". It is from the Plumer Humphreys Barton family, one of the first settlers of Newbury, Massachusetts. Made circa 1...

This strong Star Spangled Banner quilt is further emboldened by the use of solid color fabrics as well as the large size of the quilt. What is now a warm grey probably began as green. It has oxidized evenly and the color is very pleasing. The star motif is repeated in with LeMoyne stars in quilting. Sawtooth border is an excellent continuation of the triangles making up the stars. Unwashed condition. Measures 91" square; Ohio origin.

This is an elegant version of an Album Patch (aka Chimney Sweep) quilt done in a glorious grouping of fabrics from the second quarter of the 19th century. The binding is a hand loomed tape. The center is signed with the name Martha Harper. She was from Yardley, Pennsylvania; born in 1807. The fabric used for the diagonal sashing and border looks to be pieced but is actually one blue and brown printed material. The quilt is in excellent condition. There are several light water marks on the back ...

This Thousand Pyramids quilt is made of a wonderful grouping of early 19th century fabrics. It is quilted with double clamshell quilting in the body and an unusual design of concentric arcs in the wide glazed chintz border. It is in excellent, unwashed condition. Some might want it laundered to even out the white background. This can be done but since others would prefer the unwashed feel, I have decided to leave it to the purchaser. A note is sewn to a corner that reads "Barbara Krair's (sic) f...
