Ancient Byzantine bronze pectoral Reliquary Cross ENCOLPION, circa 9th-12th century A.D. Composed of two separately-cast halves hinged at the base and pinned to a suspension loop above. Cast and chiseled in low relief with the Crucifixion on the obverse and the Virgin Orans on the reverse.

Heavy walls and with finely patinated surface with green-brown patina. Very nice sound and would have been used for religious purposes.

The roundel is flat and thick and carved in white crystalized marble. The obverse depicts a general or emperor, wearing an impressive helmet of ancient style, greek or Roman. The portrait style is probably late Roman, perhaps constantinian, but we're not certain...
