Fine Japanese 18th Century Moulded Arita Blue & White Porcelain Bowl

This attractive moulded porcelain bowl with an iron-brown edged foliate rim was made during the 18th century. The underglaze blue decoration of very good colour features three human figures in a garden. Around the outer wall is an elaborate scrolling design.

A Japanese porcelain steep-sided dish depicting a traditional zashiki room or perhaps a temple interior. Below are drawn 6 Chinese characters, apocryphal mark of Emperor Ming Tchenghoa. The shibata collection of the Porcelain Museum in Arita hosts a dish with a similar decoration. Good condition. Hard porcelain dish decorated in underglaze cobalt blue. The scene represents a pavilion in a garden raised on the edge of a lake, several characters animate it. Probably scholars. The designs are artistically stylized in a very Japanese spirit. In the sky the clouds are drawn in a style typical of this period. The edge is glazed in brown. A rare set of three Deshima (Scheveningen) small bowls of lobed lotus petal form, two of which have all the elements of the traditional Deshima pattern, cups in this pattern appear to be exceptionally rare in the literature compared with flat wares, and one with a Chinese interpretation of the scene, where the figures and landscape are transposed into Chinese Immortals and a traditional Chinese style landscape, examples of which appear in the Burghley Collection etc...

A dish of scalloped rim form of six-sun size decorated with a central motif of a bouquet of Cherry blossom wrapped in the traditional manner for formal presentation with a sheath of washi paper, tsutsumi, shaped into a horn and tied with cord. The rim of the dish decorated with auspicious motifs of gobenka and cho butterflies in the typical Imari three colour palette dating to the Kyoho period circa 1710-40. The reverse decorated with ribbon ties and trailing flowers...

A good example of an “Ai Kutani” style dish decorated with a continuous scrolling vine of Peony flowers with Peony leaves and Buds set against a “frog spawn” type ground, which is typical of the period; see Volume II of the Shibata Collection no 347 for an identical border arabesque there dated circa 1670-80...

The front is decorated with a band of twenty four jewelled cash, shippo, to the rim and further shippo in ones and twos incorporated into mounds of grasses, presumably sasa, bamboo grass, of differing height, again arranged in ones and twos to create a pleasingly symmetric arrangement framing a central gobenka...

A small serving bowl mukuzuke of wasted form with a scalloped rim decorated with an underglaze blue ground of scrolling vines with chrysanthemum leaves inset with reserves containing a pair of auspicious objects, an artemeisia leave and a cash or jewelled shippo, bound by ribbons. The border enamelled and gilded with a band of nindoumon karakusa, honey suckle or acanthus leaf arabesque...

Purchased through Christie's a good number of years ago, this is a very rare Ko-Imari porcelain figure circa 1640. Decorated in iron-red, green, gold and black enamel, the seated official measures 7.5"x6"x2".

Condition: Excellent, with only minor wear to enamel and one almost undetectibly small old chip to the edge of the base.

Japanese porcelain soup tureen whose shape is inspired by European goldsmith pieces. On the sides two heads of modeled Buddhist lions and on the lid a crown. Simple decor of phoenixes, flowers, plants and waves in the color palette of the Imari style. An old collector's label indicated that this tureen was part of the service of Augustus the Strong. A rare Arita export dish decorated in Kakiemon style with a pair of Hoo birds, (Fenghuang or Pheonixes) amongst rocks and flowers, Peonies and Chrysanthemums. The rim decorated with a Bird and vine pattern arabesque. Identical dishes exist painted in this pattern but enamelled in the classic Kakiemon palette.
