Shuhan Genpo was the 468th Daitoku-ji temple's head monk, Japan's most famous Zen temple located in Kyoto.
He was a student of Nakahara Nantenbo, a leading Zen artist during Meiji period...

This is a beautifully rendered Japanese Tetsubin. Done in Iron with gorgeous mixed metal inlays of gold and silver. Portrays persimmon fruit branch with birds an Maple tree leafs representing Fall. A striking late 19th century Shigaraki Chawan with one of the most beautiful Kintsugi repairs we have ever seen. A mixture of lacquer and gold powder showing a traditional Karakusa pattern - a real unicum.

This aesthetically pleasing highest quality Kintsugi gold repair was made and in 1974 by Arakawa Kentaro, former master craftsman of the Tokyo National Museum.

The 'kara' of Karakusa means 'China', while 'kusa' means 'plant'...

Otagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875) Antique Japanese Tea Cup with inscribed poem and signature

Rengetsu Otagaki (1791-1875) was a Buddhist nun who is widely regarded to have been one of the greatest Japanese poets of the 19th century.
She was also a skilled potter and painter and expert calligrapher and adorned her ceramics with poems written in her unique calligraphic style.
The cup style and the the glaze is consistent with authentic Rengetsu work.

Edo Period (1603-1868) Hagi ware Chawan (Tea Bowl) for Tea Ceremony

Hagi pottery became popular throughout Japan for tea ceremony during Edo period (1603-1868). Hagi ware has its distinctive nice cracks together with soft texture which is highly prized among tea lovers around the world.

A beautifully hand-crafted Shino ware chawan with crackled glaze by Kato Gorohachi (?-1900). The potter signature is carved on the bottom. Probably inspired by early Korean Ido examples, the bowl perfectly lies in hands giving strong Wabi feel.
There is not much information available about this Meiji potter even in Japan and his birth year is unknown.
He worked in the Hinno kiln of Aichi Prefecture in late 19 century.

In the world of Japanese ceramics, Tamamizu-ware has an almost mythical standing. A branch of the main Raku line, at one time the two kilns held equal prominence, both being endorsed by the major tea schools of Kyoto and both being favored by the Imperial household. The first in the line was an illegitimate son of Kichizaemon Ichinyu (Yahē) who studied under his father and then left to open his own kiln in the village of Tamamizu (known today as Ide-cho)...

Another Hagi Chawan of the Koraizaemon family in our collection: wonderful Hagi tea bowl made by the 9th generation Saka Koraizaemon (1849-1921) during the Meiji Period. Fine and aesthetic Kintsugi gold restauration. It comes with its originally signed and sealed wood box and signed and sealed authentication documents.
