The hair is enhanced with black color (as it was when purchased in 2003) and grouped at the top of the skull in a bun. The interior shows the patina of an oxidized and weathered hardwood. Chinese Republic period famille rose porcelain figure of the immortal Fu holding a male child. One of the three Star Gods (sanxing), Fu represents good fortune. Impressed maker’s marks to base. Minor glaze losses and tiny chips. Originally had a horsehair beard. Early 20th century. 22” high. From the Phoenix, Arizona estate of a former expatriate to China from 1983-1987.

Obviously these two masks from the Nuo theater belong to the minorities of southern China. They constitute a set probably designed simultaneously by the same artist. One of the masks represents the monk Heshang and the second represents the jester Quintong. These masks date from at least the middle of the 20th century, that is to say about a hundred years. At least two stories are forwarded to describe this ritual phurba -1 they are as protector of crops stored in granaries. 2- they are used during funerals , the bird is supposed to take away the souls of dead people during cremation or other burial ceremonies These type of phurba seems peculiar to Gurung priests or shamans.
