This kind of Mask is sculpted with minimal work taking advantage of natural deformations. The natural material would be tree roots, at least that is the information provided by the sellers. Some of these masks would however be old and used as burlesque masks during the various festivals. Chinese Qing dynasty round form deep plate decorated in underglaze blue on a celadon-tinted white porcelain ground with a central stylized "shou” (long life) medallion encircled by ruyi lappets. Four rows of dense, stylized Sanskrit characters for the sacred “om” syllable extend around the circumference of the well. Four scholar’s objects decorate the exterior. This beautifully hand forged pin was designed by Mexico City artist Matilde Poulat c. 1930-40's. The pin measures 2" X 2" & weighs 20 grams. Penny Morrill explains on p. 217 of her book MEXICAN SILVER that the horizontal "S" is the symbol of happiness & the cascabeles signify fidelity. The pin is in excellent, unpolished condition. A beautiful pair of long dangling sterling and amethyst earrings with their original box by Mexican silversmith Emma Melendez. These are screwback earrings with a lovely scrolling design top and hanging teardrop shaped amethyst. They measure 2" long with the top part being 1/2" wide. They are in fine original condition and signed Sterling Made in Mexico 806A. They come with their original box which says PLATERIA EMMA. Gorgeous on and a great box.
