A talented silversmith and good designer, Alfredo Villasana is known not only for his original pieces (which I truly appreciate for their imaginative design and perfect finishing) but for his high quality emulations of pieces that were first issued by the big talleres, usually of the Los Castillo and Margot de Taxco ones. I am not sure whether the fabulous pectoral I am presenting here comes up with either the Los Castillo or Margot signatures in the specific configuration of elements yet the...

In the last couple of years I found myself drawn closer and closer to the jewelry created by the Los Ballesteros workshop. I am especially attracted to their “mask” pieces in all the forms they can be found as well as to what I like to call their “hinged bangle” bracelets. I consider both kinds the absolute jewel in the taller’s creative crown and it seems that there is always something new and different to discover...

Generously long and definitely mod, this Erika Hult de Corral necklace is a minimalist little treasure! Not only does it wear like a dream - for me it is the epitome of "less-is-more", except for the luscious greens that make the polished stone centering it a treat for the eye. This is a pre-1980 example of her work and quite versatile since you can easily wear it with that classy black dress or have it casually adorn your favorite worn T-shirt...

This pair of matching gold pins is made from richly-colored yellow gold. They would make an excellent addition to your collection of Victorian jewelry! Here is a cleverly designed and expertly worked pair of sterling silver earrings of abstract form, made by studio jeweler Patricia Daunis of Maine. Each earring is composed of a single piece of silver, cut into ribbons and twisted. The bands have a textured surface on one side that appears to have been produced by hammering or some sort of compression, as the design shows slightly on the undecorated side. The ridged design is enhanced with oxidation. The reverse of the earrings are signed Daunis...

Until well into the 20th c. conducting one's own archaelogical dig was not prohibited in Mexico - both Spratling and Davis are known to have engaged in personal digs and their collections were frequently enriched by the fruits of those excavations. Quite often ancient, pre-Colombian beads as well as small stone artifacts that surfaced here and there were incorporated in pieces of jewelry silversmiths made in the first decades of Mexico's Silver Renaissance. I believe the stone beads in the neckl...

Early, heavy, wrought in fine purity .980 silver the stupendous chain in this pendant necklace is obviously based on Hector Aguilar's "v" link design. Bearing simply a raised mark for Taxco and the metal content hallmark, it is without any doubt comparable to the renowned maestro's original both in heft as well as in level of craftsmanship and quality of materials used. Its deep and careful hand-chased details reflect the warmly ornamentation on the locket pendant I have paired it with. Of the s...
