This is a wonderful polychrome carved wood statue of a Holy Man , possibly 18th Century or earlier, wood carving with layer of gesso, looks like image from antiquity, figure wearing robe and cape holding book in proper left hand and missing object that was held in other hand perhaps a staff, carved from same piece of wood, worm holes throughout the back, fair to good condition, measures 29" high
Measuring just under 8" high, and 12" including the wood stand, this Santo head is exceptionally well carved, with fine detail and life like features to the face. The eyes are cast upward, and the pupils are carved in a concave manner. Most of the face and beard retain the original gesso and paint, with more loss to the back of the head, and most of the paint in the eyes is gone.
