This antique Japanese tea caddy is called a "Cha-ire" and dates from the late Edo period. It was used for storing thick tea which is called "Koicha". The more common tea caddy form or "natsume" was used for powdered or thin tea. The chai-ire forms vary somewhat and were most typically made from clay.

A beautifully and finely enamelled turquoise ground "famillie-rose" bowl. It has an alternate motive of a bat flying on top of a iron red Shou character followed by a lotus flower surrounded by meandering foliate and branching leaf. The base has four iron red Chien Lung (1736-1796) period character mark. This bowl is an early 20th century export piece for the South-East Asian market.

This elaborate silver Miao headband would be worn by a woman for festival. First a piece of fabric would be tied around the womans head to protect her from the sharp edges of the metal. The headband would make a soft pleasing sound as the woman moved her head. The man on horseback and flowers are a reference to the Miao myth of bringing light into the world. The headband is approx 20 inches long.

Vajradhara or Dorje Chang in Tibetan is the ultimate primordial Buddha or Adi Buddha according to the Gelug and Kagyu schools of Tibetan Buddhism. This fine example is from Tibet or possibly from Nepal. It is well proportioned and has very nice facial features. Please note the fine engraving on the back of the figure. This vase has splayed foot, a bulbous body, a straight neck and a deepply foliated mouth with everted lip. The main body of the piece is decorated with a densely moulded floral design. Incised around the neck are stylised plantain leaves, a motive which becomes integral to the decorative sryle of qingbai. The piece is covered with white translucent glaze except for the base, which is unglazed.

Of very large size (25") and heavy (13 pounds each), these bronze pricket candlesticks are Japanese in origin, late Meiji, and are signed with an etched mark on the bottom of each. They both have a very deep and rich patina, very dark brown, with no abrasions or dents. The top lotus form cups are separate, and slip tightly into the stem of the sticks. The lotus cups are nicely and simply decorated, and each handle features the head of a shishi or foo lion, and tapers nicely at the bottom of ...
