This is a bee hive shaped waterpot. It is sometimes referred to taibo zun or qizhao zun(chicken coop) in Chinese because of the shape. The domed shaped body has a countersunk base, with three incised roundel of scrolling kui dragons just about visible just beneath the beach bloom glaze accented with splashes of pink and a minute sprinkle apple or lime green...

This antique Japanese tea caddy is called a "Cha-ire" and dates from the late Edo period. It was used for storing thick tea which is called "Koicha". The more common tea caddy form or "natsume" was used for powdered or thin tea. The chai-ire forms vary somewhat and were most typically made from clay.

Both the octagonal shape and lacquer finish make this chaire very rare. It is also lovely...

 

A very rare big shard sample of five dynasty shallow dish, this large shard is decorated with celadon glaze, there is good sample drawing of twin birds. this shards is very good for studying and comparison to any one who interested in studying early Chinese porcelain.

Fine Ivory carved Japanese Netsuke of a Shishi Dog signed Tomo Tada a masterfully carved piece in excellent condition. Measuring 2 1/4 inches long or 5.5 centimeters.

A large dish, heavily potted, curving gently up from a ring foot, covered in a beautiful celadon glaze producing the "iron wire, golden thread" crackles of the Geyao type glaze. The recessed base is unglazed with orange burnt. Ming Dynasty : 16th Century Diameter 27 cm. Condition : Good , one shallow chip on the mouthrim, no hairline, crack or restoration.

H. 23 cm , slight discoloring on the shoulder due to the firing process. Excellent condition.

A 17th century dorje (thunderbolt of enlightenment) Buddhist ritual object of a dark color with some green encrustation. Some dorjes at that time were made from meteorites found in the Himalayas. This particular dorje is quite heavy and there is a possibility that it may be made from a meteorite but we have not had it tested...

A small fan painting by an anonymous painter of the Tosa School in ink, colors and gold on paper. Mounted on goldfleck paper. Depicting a battle scene of the "Tale of the Heike", an epic account of the struggle between the Taira and Minamoto clans for control of Japan at the end of the 12th century. This fan painting probably belongs to the same set of illustrations of the "Heike Monogatari" in the Museum of Asian Art in Berlin. Condition: slightly browned, some pigments rubbed...

A sansai-glazed Tang Dynasty pottery tripod censer. Most sansai-glazed pottery include green and amber glazes - this vessel is glazed in blue and amber glazes. Blue sansai-glazed pottery is very rare since the blue color was made from cobalt imported from the Middle East and was very expensive at the time. Blue cobalt glazed sancai pieces go for much higher prices because of the preciousness of the ingredient and how scarcely it was used...

Handle with braided silver wire, pierced and partially gilded pommel cover. Straight, single edged steel blade. The scabbard has a wooden core encased in a silver sheathing, decorated with foliage, scrolls and shou characters. Condition: Blade with some rust. Dimensions: Total length is 34.9 cm, 4.2 cm wide. The blade is 24,5 cm long and 2.8 cm wide. Weight: 422 gram.

This Dong festival hat is wonderfully embroidered with wrapped thread technique. It is further embellished with gold and silver bits edging the fabric design. At the back is the traditional silver ornament of butterfly and hanging bells to keep evil spirit away

Lovely lobed dishes with a creamy white glaze. Diameter 11,2 cm. Very good condition, one of the dishes with some light brown stains, due to its long time in the soil. Song Dynasty (960-1279).

Decorated with continous chrysantemum scroll on the exterior and floral spray on the center. Ming Dynasty Diamater = 14.5 cm; Height = 7 cm Condition : very short hairline (0.5 cm) on the rim.

A beautifully and finely enamelled turquoise ground "famillie-rose" bowl. It has an alternate motive of a bat flying on top of a iron red Shou character followed by a lotus flower surrounded by meandering foliate and branching leaf. The base has four iron red Chien Lung (1736-1796) period character mark. This bowl is an early 20th century export piece for the South-East Asian market.

Minor firing faults and pinholes. No sign of cracks or chips...

A chambu lota, bulbous vessel for sacred Ganges water used by pilgrims. Made of brass and copper, with exceptional floral design. This type of metalware is known as ganga-jumna referring to the two great rivers of North India. Condition: the mouth is slightly deformed, few small quite invisible dents, the foot with a small breakage. Dimension: 16.4 cm high, weight: 1140 g.

Tibetan butterfly-shaped woolen under-saddle rug "Makden", made in two pieces in knotted pile. Backed with purple cotton, edged with red wool fabric and having two not pierced strap holes. Decorated with peony flowers and waves. Condition: clean, full pile only few areas with little wear, backing with a small hole. Dimension: 112 cm x 72 cm.

The center of the slightly domed cover carved with floral, the details finely incised, covered inside and out with a greenish-olive glaze that continues onto the countersunk base which shows traces of linear spur marks EARLY NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY, 10TH CENTURY 5¼ in. This elaborate silver Miao headband would be worn by a woman for festival. First a piece of fabric would be tied around the womans head to protect her from the sharp edges of the metal. The headband would make a soft pleasing sound as the woman moved her head. The man on horseback and flowers are a reference to the Miao myth of bringing light into the world. The headband is approx 20 inches long.

A front Mandarin square dating from the second half of the 19th century. An insignia for an imperial censor, showing the white mythical beast "xiezahi" or "xiezhi" with its dragon head and single horn. Standing on a rock above deep water, the ground with auspicious emblems. Made of silk tapestry (kossu, k'o-suu) with metallic threads and painted details...

Each page of this antique Chinese accordian style book has a hand painted picture which together tell an old folk tale. There are 8 paintings and they are each delightful.

Vajradhara or Dorje Chang in Tibetan is the ultimate primordial Buddha or Adi Buddha according to the Gelug and Kagyu schools of Tibetan Buddhism. This fine example is from Tibet or possibly from Nepal. It is well proportioned and has very nice facial features. Please note the fine engraving on the back of the figure. It is in a very good condition with normal age wear, a nice patina and remains of polychrome. H. 23 cm. From a Dutch private collection.

This vase has splayed foot, a bulbous body, a straight neck and a deepply foliated mouth with everted lip. The main body of the piece is decorated with a densely moulded floral design. Incised around the neck are stylised plantain leaves, a motive which becomes integral to the decorative sryle of qingbai. Of very large size (25") and heavy (13 pounds each), these bronze pricket candlesticks are Japanese in origin, late Meiji, and are signed with an etched mark on the bottom of each. They both have a very deep and rich patina, very dark brown, with no abrasions or dents. The top lotus form cups are separate, and slip tightly into the stem of the sticks. The lotus cups are nicely and simply decorated, and each handle features the head of a shishi or foo lion, and tapers nicely at the bottom of ...
