Thai 13th - 15th Century Sawankhalok Stoneware Covered Box

This covered stoneware box was made during the 13th - 15th centuries at the Sawankhalok kilns. It is elaborately decorated in underglaze blue with a ring of yellowish-brown glaze around the moulded top of the cover that is in the form of picked fruit. Diameter 9.75 cm, height 8 cm. There are a couple of fine hairline cracks to the edge of the cover and minor chips to the edge of the box...

 

Gilded bronze Buddha with great age wear and patina. H. 32 cm. Condition: on the right corner there is a loop where a small bronze disciple was placed. The loop on the left side is missing; this must have happened a long time ago as the remains are hardly visible. There is an old collection label on the back.

A Rare Blue & White Jar, decorated with Peony scroll. Vietnam 15th Century, Le-Mac dynastic period (1428-1788). Perfect condition. Height: 33 cm.

With very fine engraving of fighting cockerels against a floral background. 19th century. H. 8 cm, W. 7,5 cm, D. 3,5 cm. Weight 187 gr.

A nice small jar painted by Persian imported cobalt-blue materials of continuous chrysanthemum scroll around the body. 15th-16th century Annamese ware. Condition with tiny flake chip to rim and tilt to one side, otherwise is in fairly good condition. High: 6.5cm and Wide: 7.7cm

A fine one of Annamese type b/w jar with luster glaze even more smoothly than Jindezhen ware products, decorated with bright imported cobalt-blue tone of Chrysanthemum scroll. Vietnam 14th-15th century. Condition is perfect except minor glaze firing imperfection to be yellowish on aside of neck and two shallow flake chips to unglazed base. High: 9 cm.

A very Large translucent pale blue-green glass earring from Southeast Asia, probably from Vietnam or Cambodia.The glass is in the form of a thick oval hoop that tapers at the ends. There is some soil encrustation on the ends from being buried. Size: Diameter 8cm. Condition: Perfect.

Depicting a naked girl. Made of wood, painted in yellow/brown and black. On the belly a table with Burmese letters. Original hair. Ca. Early to mid 20th century. Good condition. H. 23,5 cm. Comes with a black metal stand.

The handle in the shape of a loving couple. H. 19 cm. (excl. stand). Date: early to mid 20th century. Good age wear and nice patina. From a Dutch private collection.

One similar piece appear on Christies 1984 auction cataloque in London, with high 11.5cm and wide 15.7cm. They also note the other only one recorded example in that times of this Double-Headed type appears to be illustrated by William Willets, 'Ceramic Art of Southeast Asia, 1971, no.85. which is subsequently illustrated, Strait Times Annual, 1981, pp, 57-58, and Southeast Asian Ceramic Society, Vietnamese Ceramics, 1982, no.103.

Two blue glass earrings from Cambodia most likely a pair. Size: Width. 2.5cm and 2.4cm. Condition: Some incrustation from being buried so long. Age: 300 to 100 BC.

A recent excavated Sawankhalok ewer, rarely pear shaped with Dragons handle and to the spout as well, decorated with incised a Royal figurine and a Fish among floral scroll on the body painted with an underglaze iron-brown wash. It is the rarity Sawankhalok 15th-16th century pieces was ever found in South Sulawesi "Bulukumba" area, would be open for inquiry after re-build and repaired. High: 24 cm.

Made in mid Java, hammered and chiseled copper or bronze, decorated with a kind of vase with flower branches. Diameter 40,5 cm. Very good condition and lovely patina. Only one tiny hole.

A finely decorated Vietnamese blue and white porcelain bowl. Thinly potted and with a crackled glaze over blue and white aquatic decoration suggesting waves on the bowl's exterior, a conch shell inside the cavetto and surrounded by a variety of blossoming flowers among grasses. Good condition with expected wear including a couple minor chips inside the foot rim and light abrasion inside the bowl. Diameter at widest point 6 1/8 inches (15.56cm). A rare crystal ring from the Pyu dynasty carved with a fish,the sea and a crescent moon. The fish is a early Buddhist symbol for incarnation carried over from Hinduism. A rare and lovely blue & white miniature shape of Meiping bottle vase, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue. Vietnam 15th century, Ly-Tran period in perfect condition. High: 6.8 cm.

A gold ornament which looks like to me to be a warrior carrying a club. It's hard to date this piece, but looking at the patina on the gold I would say around 16th century.Found in Burma but could be from India. Size: 3cm x 2.5cm. Condition: No repairs.Some opening which are normal in old gold repousse work.

An ancient necklace made from fossilized wood also know as Pumtek. The word Pumtek means "buried thunderbolt". This type of necklace is very rare. Size: 56 cm from end to end.

Chinese Qing dynasty export porcelain Benjarong (five color) bowl made for the Thai market densely decorated in relief polychrome enamels around the circumference with eight alternating Buddhist celestial beings. The turquoise-green interior is accented with a floral circular medallion at the base of the well and a floral band around the interior top. 19th century. 7 1/8” diameter x 3 1/2” high. A rare 19th or early 20th century Malayan kris with an attractive pamir/pamor steel blade. The hilt has a (probably replacement) metal collar and a finely carved Garuda head in "kingfisher" form. The wood scabbard is decorated with engraved Straits Chinese style white metal bands depicting Buddhist emblems. There are old losses to the 'flared' top of the scabbard and the left 'ear' of the Garuda head is missing. Unusually there is no damage to the 'nose'. The old blade is in very good condition...

Large Thai 14th - 15th Century Sawankhalok Jar

This stoneware jar, or bottle of globular form was made during the 14th - 15th centuries at one of the Sawankhalok kilns. It is particularly heavily-potted. Around the shoulder and lower body are repeated bands of lightly incised lines. There are two small loop handles at the neck. It is coated in a finely-crackled greenish-grey glaze that falls short of the foot revealing the dark reddish brown stoneware body...

A fine dish, decorated in underglazed iron-brown to the center with a blossoms of chrysanthemum flower and classic scroll around the rim sides with beautifully age crackled glaze. Vietnam's 14th century in perfect condition. Diameter: 30cm.

A black terracotta Buddha amulet in the sitting position in-cased in a stainless steel case from Thailand. Age; Pre 1900 or earlier. Size: H. 3cm. Condition: No repairs.

Large Thai bronze Buddha head with serene face and downcast almond eyes, curled headdress, flaming usnisa, and elongated ears. The casting is thin, the patina is very nice, and there is typical corrosion and wear evident. Traces of gilt are visible in the usnisa and hair (see close up images). Fine Vietnamese 14th / 15th Century Moulded Bowl

This rare bowl was made during the 14th - 15th century and is coated in a finely-crackled yellowish-brown glaze, the depth of colour varying according to its thickness. Around the centre is a wide unglazed stacking ring, and around the inner wall are various moulded leaf and floral patterns. Apart from unintentional glaze splashes, the foot remains unglazed.

Burmese silver ceremonial or monk's begging bowl. The exterior is decorated in repousse with a wide band of five mythological scenes with one figure and an elephant between foliage. Apparently unmarked. Condition: fine. Dimension: 13.8 cm diameter, 9.8 cm high, weight: 352 g.

A late 19th - early 20th century "Yun" lacquered betel box with incised design of two horses and riders, elephant and dancers. The box is divided into three pieces. The bottom part for betel leaves and the top part for lime, areca nuts, clove and other ingredients. Size: H. 10.5cm. Diameter. 21cm. Condition: No repairs. Some age cracking.

Thai Sawankhalok 13th/15th Century Stoneware Bottle (Ex. Grahame Clarke Collection)

This finely-shaped stoneware bottle, with its pear-shaped body and wide flaring mouth, was made during the 13th - 15th Century at one of the Sawankhalok kilns. It is quite "heavily-potted" and coated in a very unusual glaze of a dark greenish-blue colour with a most attractive crackled effect. There are incised bands around the neck...

Vietnamese 15th Century Blue & White Double-Gourd Jar

This rare and attractively-shaped small double-gourd jar was made during the 15th century. It is coated in a finely-crackled glaze and elaborately decorated in underglaze blue, the pattern featuring scrolling floral and lotus leaf patterns. Height 7 cm. It is in very good condition with no repair or restoration and just minor “nibbling” to the edge of the vulnerable mouth.

In bhumisparsa mudra, sitting on a stepped lotus stand. Originally the Buddha was holding a fan, which is missing. It dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. H. 29 cm.

Thai 13th - 15th Century Incised Stoneware Covered Box

A finely and rare covered box of circular form with a dome shaped cover and "Bird" figural handle. Decorated in underglaze iron-black with alternating vegetal and cross-hatching panels, with lobing highlighted in brown glaze. Buff stoneware body with a greenish transparent glaze stopping above the foot which is painted in iron-brown, unglazed base with a circular firing stand scar. Condition is excellent. 15th-16th century Sawankhalok ware. Diameter: 10.5 cm and High: 11 cm.

This lovely 19th century piece came from a Dutch private collection where it has been since the 1980's. It is 55 cm high and at the base it measures 25x25 cm. It has normal age wear and a wonderful old patina.

This powder horn is dating to the 19th / early 20th century. The curved body is made from water buffalo horn, beautifully carved with curvilinear motifs, the wide end with a wooden stopper. An old silver alloy offering vessel of oblong form, the outside repoussed with two monster masks among scrolls. Base with chiselled symbol. According to Urs Ramseyer in "The Art and Culture of Bali", these bowls were dignity symbols of the Balinese gentry, filled with betel accessories. Condition: few traces of usage. Thai Sawankhalok round form covered stoneware footed box in the shape of a mangosteen fruit decorated in iron-black/brown glaze on a buff-colored ground with alternating panels of geometric designs and flowers.
