Description: A wood figure of a seating official was finely carved from one piece of camphor wood. Making use of the core of the wood, the wood circular growth rings were obviously revealed on the belly of the figure and were intriguingly as the grains of the wearing drapery. By excellent carving skill, the official was vividly rendered. The enduring patina added more atmosphere to this marvelous piece. Date: Qing Dynasty. Height: 23.5cm

Koi frolic, splashing gold and silver waves as they leap and battle for the top of this stacking food dish dating from the later 19th century. The design is striking! Outside is polished black loaded down with gold and silver maki-e with applied kirigane cut gold squares. Inside is festive red. The box (assembled) is 25 x 23 x 38 cm (10 x 9 x 15 inches). Some minor dings but overall, very nice condition for something which has seen use.

The bone beads are drum-shaped and inlaid with bits of coral and turquoise. Additional discs of metal are sometimes sandwiched between the bone beads. Prayer beads were hand held strands used for counting mantras during prayer. This strand is long enough to slip over the head easily and it makes a beautiful necklace. The Kiseruzutsu (pipe case) is delicately engrave with a goose and grass, bone ring to the top. The clasp to the leather pouch shows a tiger and dragon in brass. When seen together, they represent the concept of duality in the cosmos. There is a repair (sewn together) on the left side of leather pouch. This dates from the first years of the Meiji period (1868-1912).
