Two silk Fukusa wrapping cloths designed and or hand painted by Kamisaka Sekka enclosed in the original signed wooden box dating from the Taisho period. This Toba-e E-maki appears to be a 19th century Gi-ga follower of the later 18th to early 19th century Osaka "Manga-ka" Nichosai (Matsudaira Heisaburo). His humorous images of Hell were quite popular, known as Kakuyu painting.　Overall the genre has many names, Gi-ga being all encompassing, Toba-e being descriptive of this particular style, and Kakuyu-fu being the style of Nichosai. Kalvak (1901-1984) was from Ulukhaktok, Northwest Territories, Canada and she was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. From the design workshop of Los Castillo in Taxco Mexico, this beautiful vase is hand hammered silver plate with abalone inlay in the curved petals on the lip. It measures 5 3/8" high and 3 7/8" across at the top. The body is heavily ribbed, in what seems to be called the "melon" design by Los Castillo. Most unusual Inuit soapstone carving of two figures, one a human face in hood, and on the back, a standing owl. Good dramatic size, it measures 9 3/4" high and is 4 1/2" wide and 4 1/2" deep.
