This is an old Chinese carpentry tool. It was used the same as today's carpenter's "chalk line". The bowl would be filled with powdered charcoal and the string would be pulled through the bowl, and a straight line would be snapped. The string would be rewound by tuning the "crank handle". Older carpenters frequently made their own tool and the carving on this one is very well done, a dragons head floating in a wave pattern. Note the hand made string...very rare...

Los Ballesteros made heavy well made and well thought out designs and the choice of these beautiful blue and green stones was masterful. The entire piece is hand chased and follows a swirl that moves gracefully from link to link. It has a 16in. wearable and the drop is 1.5in. tall. The stones are .5in x .75in. This wonderful scenic oil on artist board was purchased at a large market in the heart of Paris. There is a signature in the lower left corner, A. Gergeard 1933 and a sticker on the back with the address of the shop where the artist board was sold. The painting is in great condition with only the edges and corners showing a bit of wear. Golden mist shrouds the aged pines draped with wisteria growing about the crashing falls on this anonymous early Edo period gold screen. A rare scene to find, rigid lines and the lavish use of gold are typical of the first half of the Edo era. The screen features a colorful brocade border with vermilion lacquer frame and has been fully remounted without re-painting. It measures 68-1/2 x 63-1/2 inches (174 x 162 cm) and is in fine condition, showing some old repairs.
