Found in a small antique shop in central Kyoto, this piece immediately caught my eye and I knew I had to buy it. With no original box and a potting mark that could not be deciphered, this one remains a beautiful mystery. The style itself is very close to that of internationally renowned 8th generation Hagi potter Kaneta Masanao (b. 1953); so much so in fact that we decided to contact this artist to see if it was one of their pieces. A deep pool of rice wine awaits the drinker in this stately form by Miwa Kazuhiko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Cup of Deep Abundance (Fuchifuchi-hai). The name comes from the deep part of a river (fuchi) where fish tend to gather. Mori Togaku was born in Inbe, in the heart of Bizen territory in 1937. He was recognized quite early by the Japanese Ceramics Society, awarded in 1969, and would receive the JCS Gold award in 2002, one of the most coveted prizes in Japan. He exhibited with the Nihon Togeiten (Japanese National Pottery Exhibition) from 1971...

A spectacular tea bowl by Kato Yasukage XIV enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Oribe Chawan and signed 14th Yasukage. The smoothly undulating rim floats above the faceted sides, like acloud over the precipitous crags of Gifu prefecture, home of Oribe-ware. To accentuate the random vein which carries the lifeblood of Japanese pottery, fortuitous flashes of yellow and blue with rich irons flare on the surface like acts of nature.

A charred Ash Glazed chawan by Kumano Kurouemon enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kuma Shino and signed To Kuroemon. Despite that the kodai foot is small and delicate, adding creating tension between form and the space around it. A sublime example of this popular artist’s work.
