A beautiful assortment of colors and textures play across the dark red surface of this exquisite Chaire tea container by Fujiwara Ken enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Bizen Yohen Chaire and annotated by Sokuchusai (1901-1979) the 13th generations Omotesenke Headmasteres. One can easily see why a graet tea ceremony master would wish to associate his name with the work. This is one of the best pieces I have ever seen by this important artist...

Written on the box in Japanese script are the words “Awai Sakura Yu” translating to English as “Pale Cherry Blossom Glaze”—amply describing the appearance of this unique and frankly stunning work of Kutani pottery by artist Nakata Kazuo. Reminiscent of pieces by well-known artist Ōno Hakuko, there are striated lines of silver leaf running vertical below the surface of the glaze, interrupted in places, allowing the eye to wander across the entire surface...

A large primitive robotic form by Morino Taimei in his iconic blue and gold dating from his experimental days in the early 1970 enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Soji Shiho Kabin. It is 12 inches (30 cm) tall, 6 inches (15 cm) square and in excellent condition.
Taimei was born in Kyoto in 1934, and was first accepted into the Nitten National Exhibition at a relatively young age in 1957 (a year before graduating the Kyoto Municipal University of Fine Art!)...

I find this piece captivating, the golden thorns rupturing the rough and blank matte white clay. When I asked the artist about his concept, he explained the clay body is the individual formed by self-image, societal pressure, ego, all the things which constrict our actions and channel our emotions. The thorns are the true inner self bursting out of the surface, irrepressible, they pierce the shell and shine like the sun...

There is no doubt about the superlative nature of the deep celadon glazes used by Living National Treasure Nakajima Hiroshi, and this sake set is no let down. A rich coral red covers the sake flask, the sake cup covered in deeply fissured celadon glaze which comes enclosed in their original signed wooden boxes titled modestly Tokkuri and Guinomi respectively. Up from the base drive three fingers of rich red clay, the blanks left by the artists fingers when he dipped the bottle in glaze...

Fresh out of the oven, here is a delicious treat to start the new year right, a crusty dancing form by Murakoshi Takuma enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Mimitsuki Hana-ire. Not only does the vase itself feel alive with movement, but the encrustations of ash and glossy molten ash glaze seem to be still in formation, as if it is still settling in the kiln. A crusty black clay vase by Sakata Jinnai enclosed in the original signed wood box. Sculpted out into a crescent, it roughly forms a 24 cm (9-1/2 inch) diameter circle. Excellent condition.

Red highlights the orange and white on this playful form vase by Kato Yasukage enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shino Hanaire and signed by the 14th Generation Yasukage followed by his seal. The pin-holed glaze burnt and licked crimson by the flames. The way the color fades into the white feldspar one can almost imagine the smoke rising off of the molten form as it cooled in the kiln...

Here is a rare work reflecting the shape and character of this famous artist but in Bizen clay, Shigaraki yes, Iga yes, Shino and Kohiki yes, Bizen vase first time for me. It is this sense of raw elementalism which puts Japanese pottery apart, and gives it its unique place of reverence in world ceramics.

An exquisite work of layered pottery by challenging female artist Fukumoto Fuku enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shinonome ( Beginning of Morning Twilight). The clear white glaze certainly is like moonlight, and something about the impact of the form into multiple forms calls to mind an asteroid strikeing ground. It is both calm and alive with movement at the same time.

A shell shaped swirling form by young female artist Takatsu Mio enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 6-1/2 inches (16.5cm)wide, roughly 7 inches (18cm) tall and in excellent condition.
Takatsu Mio (b. 1976) was raised in Gifu prefecture among the scattered kilns of Mino. She graduated the Osaka University of Arts Sculpture Department in 1999, moving on to advanced studies which she completed in 2001. Her first exhibited works were in 1999, and then again in Tokyo in 2001. ...
