Perfect for the black turtlenecks and heavy coats of winter this vintage Mexican Deco silver and turquoise bird of paradise brooch is a stupendous work of art! Spratling designed this stunning sterling silver piece during a period of time when he worked to develop a plan modeled on what he had done in Taxco, to help create an economic base for native Alaskans writes Penny Morrill in her book WILLIAM SPRATLING AND THE MEXICAN SILVER RENASSIANCE p.239. Hallmarks date this very rare Hubert Harmon pin 1942-1944. This is a huge piece, measuring 4 1/4" top to bottom and a width of 1 1/2".
At front and center is a huge carved face. The winged ears and turban have exquisite repoussé silver work, with amethyst cabochons for earrings, on the turban, and on the dangling necklace - which swings freely in front. The face is smooth to the touch, with internal inclusions but no chips or cracks.

Carved Shell Cameo set in a silver frame with a gold colored rope twist accent. The frame is marked only 800 in an oval and is most likely Italian. The carving is excellent, with highlights of different colors left in the hair. The frame has a pin closure and a moveable bail so it can be worn as a pin or a pendant. The profile of the woman and mark on the frame suggests Victorian era of 1875 - 1880's. Condition is excellent.
Formed as parrots with flowing tails, with sharply molded detail. One clip mechanism is slightly loose, but both are in good working order, with a patent application number that dates to 1931. The backs bear the Los Castillo/Taxco/Made in Mexico marks, as well as the design number of 168A. Each bird measures 1 7/8 inches long by 1 3/8 inches at the widest part. Gross weight: 26.6g

It is signed "SALVADOR STERLING MEXICO 510 (bellmark)36". Can also be worn as a brooch. The modernist design is a true work of art...

A delightful Imperial Austrian silver brooch set with three reverse-carved Essex crystals by the Imperial jeweler Georg Adam Scheid. The domed pin is finely engraved in a basket-weave motif and is pierced by three Essex crystals, each depicting a lap dog, perhaps a Pekingese. The dogs are well carved and colored, with tiny blue bows under their chins. The crystals never had a mother-of-pearl backing like those produced in England and France...
