SUN-DRIED OCTOPUS

A masterpiece of 'Chigiri-e' (ref. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chigiri-e) as Japanese traditional paper collage to rip and paste paper with only hands with no tool. This green and yellow bitter melon shape overlay glass snuff bottle is 2 ½ inches tall and 1 ¾ inches wide. It depicts a grasshopper landing on a Chinese bitter melon plant; a moth (or butterfly) is flying around a flower. The workmanship is great and the idea to make the bottle like a melon definitely makes it interesting.

When I first saw this abstracted figure drawing I was half expecting to see the "Moore" signature, thinking this a dead ringer for the work of famous English modern artist Henry Moore (1898-1986). Measuring 8" by 6", 13 1/4" by 10 1/4" including the gray mat and silver metal frame, the piece is signed "Saibra" at lower right, or, possibly (less likely), "Sailera"...

Louis Raemaekers (April 6, 1869 – July 26, 1956) was a Dutch painter and editorial cartoonist for the Amsterdam newspaper De Telegraaf during World War I, noted for his anti-German stance First World War[edit] Immediately after the Germans invaded Belgium, Louis Raemaekers became one of their fiercest critics. His message was clear: the Netherlands had to take sides for the Allies and abandon its neutral stance...

This very well carved agate contemporary snuff bottle is 2 ¾” high, 1” wide and 3 quarters of an inch thick. The artist used the colors very well. The lighter part was carved as the body of the bottle. The dark part was carved as a bamboo branch with leaves and small Ling Zhi (tree mushroom). It is well hollowed, polished and in great condition.

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, many not yet added to my shop), this is a fine image in charcoal with some faint red color added, executed on thin, inexpensive slightly browned paper, 12" by 17", unframed, signed at lower right, undated but likely late 1950's, by the California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968)...

Russian late twentieth century lacquer box, 6" by 4" by 1 5/8" high, with signature (I believe) in Russian, and also a title, in Russian, at lower left. It is a great image, with mounted medieval horseman, an orthodox church in the distance, and a figure like Old Man Winter blowing at the horseman. Colors are delicate and pleasing. I have been using this as a trinket holder on my night table...

Chris was born in Buffalo, NY, and began illustrating at an early age. He initially attended a graphic design school, and from 1993-96, he studied fine arts in oil painting at Buffalo State College, under professors Jim Phalen, Constance Payne and Richard Gubernick...

Old watercolor drawing (perhaps charcoal in places as well) with slight use of white gouache, unsigned, the subject a younger man of the sixteenth century or thereabouts. The drawing (15 1/2" by 12") is on grayish heavy paper (the true color is indicated by the first two images---the subsequent ones were taken in different light, suggesting a more tan color). The age of the drawing itself is especially difficult to determine in this instance...
