Oil on canvas, 24" by 36" (28" by 39" as framed), UNSIGNED, but certainly by the popular listed California artist HERBERT SARTELLE (1885-1955) (I will stand by this). This is a classic mountain scene favored by the artist (he seems to have painted that particular mountain over and over again), with large eucalyptus trees and a lake with distant mountains, all executed in Sartelle's unique impressionistic style and characteristic color palette. The painting probably dates to the 1940s or 1950s...

Oil on canvas laid on Masonite, 20" by 16" (27" by 23" nicely framed in gold California style frame by Summit Frames of San Diego), unsigned, attributed to the famed American sculptor and artist, JOHN GUTZON BORGLUM (1867-1941). The painting features a large tree such as would be found in a California redwood or sequoia forest. The attribution comes in the form of some cryptic notes on paperwork affixed to the reverse side, and a placard placed on the front side...

A very sweet oil on canvas painting of several young ice skaters in Holland in winter, the scene completed by a classic windmill in the left distance and snowy roofs at right. The work is signed at lower right in red "M. Leuty" or "Lenty". I do not see an obvious listed artist that would correspond. Measurements are 22" by 16", and 26" by 20" framed. Despite the European subject matter, the artist could be American; materials used suggest that possibility...

A pair of oil on card paintings, each signed lower left, by C. Ph. Weber. The first is of a church and churchyard behind a rock wall. The second depicts fishing along the Delaware river. Typical of the artist's work is the fine use of light and color, rendering an almost impressionistic feel.

Oil on canvas laid on board landscape of a river in a mountainous scene including a few picturesque structures, signed with initials "LJGC" at lower left, and dated there 1904. There is a high likelihood that the artist who created this attractive painting was from mountainous Wales in the British Isles, as I have seen another painting online, identically signed, dated 1914, the scene depicted in that example given as the River Wye in Wales...

An antique truly American painting (not the more common similar-looking English scenes) with feathery tree at left, a few simple wooden houses, distant church steeple, and two tiny central figures, a manageable size at 22" by 30" (29 1/2" by 37 1/2" in the likely original framing), apparently unsigned. This old work came out of a dilapidated local home, having no doubt hung there for decades...

Acrylic on canvas painting, 24" by 24", unframed, signed illegibly lower right, also dated there 06 and inscribed. I cannot make out the signature, and do not know if it be simply by an amateur of considerable talent, or perhaps, by a known artist? The signature most definitely has a professional look to it.

While we have yet to identify the artist or the subject, we would contend that the work is first rate considering the mood captured by the painter. The man exudes a somewhat austere aristocratic brood, yet exudes the strengths of youth and ambition, a man ready to make his place in the world. We believe the work to be of the British school painted c. 1850 or earlier as suggested by the early Victorian shape of the seat rail.
