Early 20th century Dutch harbor scene by Gerard Wiegman (1875-1964). The painting depicts a large cargo ship moored at harbor and surrounded by a variety of smaller ships, fishing boats and tugs. The sky is painted in moody shades of ochres and grays that echo the colors found in the water. This choice of coloring suggests the obvious industrial nature of this unidentified harbor. "Village Pond" oil on canvas 15 1/2" x 20 3/4" unframed Langer was born on Dec. 11th 1860 in Leipzig, Germany. After becoming a journey painter he was admitted to The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (Copenhagen, Denmark) in 1877 after studying under W. Kyhn and Sigurd Konstantin-Hansen. He graduated from there in 1886. He made study tours to Italy (1886), Paris (1893), The Balkans (1920) and Sweden (1920) and several other places, and received the Raben-Levetzau scholarship in 1894...

At first glance this appears to be a 17th century Dutch landscape oil on panel by someone like Ruisdael, Hobbema, Cuyp, Van Goyen, or other famous artists of that time and place. Closer examination reveals that this is actually a late 20th century work in that style, signed at lower right by artist J M GRISWOLD. I do not see information on the artist but he or she was clearly familiar with 17th century Dutch art...

A contemporary painting in Old Master style, the subject a Dutch street scene with no less than eight figures, a church in the center background. The unframed 24" by 20" oil on canvas is signed at lower right corner "W. Caufield" (or "Canfield"). Note the attention to detail in the cobblestones and stone buildings (which are snow-dusted). The style derives from classic Dutch Old Masters and 19th century painters such as Cornelis Springer, Adrianus Eversen, and others. Condition is excellent...
