This is an appealing little sketch, oil on board of a landscape with a line of trees, a tawny field, a few structures and an extensive view beyond, unsigned, circa 1940's or 1950's. It is obviously by a talented artist who failed to sign his or her name. Perhaps it is a study for a more finished painting to come. Measuring 12" by 16", it should be easy to find a (common, "standard size") suitable frame. Condition is good save for a stubbed, worn corner at upper extreme right, as shown.

I checked with an authority on the works of Canadian/California artist William Henry Clapp (1879-1954) to see if he thought this might be by that artist, which would enhance its value significantly...

PAIR of attractive impressionist paintings of a late autumn landscape with flaming trees, and a stream in a birch forest in spring, both oil on canvasboard, each signed lower right by artist M. F. BILAN and dated 1954. The artist does not appear to be listed but was talented. The strong contrast of the seasons portrayed makes the pair very complementary. Mid Century Sci Fi oil on canvas of a card player said to be magazine cover from a 1950s sci fi publication. We bought this and another we are listing in the late 1990 in Los Angeles , the seller didn't remember the artist name but said the artist was an early Sci Fi artist . the painting is unsigned in good condition though could use a cleaning. Very well done one of my favorites. Size overall 17" by 21" sight 15" by 12" approximately.
