Japanese inlay ceramics (zōgan) are created by making incisions on the surface of a clay body which are then filled with various colored clays, creating a pattern. After the pattern is finalized, an overglaze is applied and the piece is sent to the kiln to be fired. As can be seen here, the results are quite striking and produce unique patterns that cannot be replicated through painting alone. Inlaying as a technique is thought to have originally derived from practices in metal and woodworking but is prevalent in many potting traditions throughout the world. Not overly concerned about categorization, this piece by Nishida is labeled on the box as a flower vase, however, the inclusion of a lacquer lid means that it is also suitable as a fresh water jar for tea ceremony (mizusashi).

The artist, Nishida Shinya (b. 1955), studied under National Living Treasure Shimizu Uichi (1926-2004) whose influence is apparent in many of Nishida’s works. Most known for his pieces using an inlay technique producing geometric symmetry and rays of color across the surface of curved clay bodies. Over the course of his long career, Nishida has received many honors including the 23rd Tokai Traditional Craft Exhibition, Nagoya City Board of Education Award in 1992, the 40th Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition, Asahi Shimbun Company Award in 1993, and the 31st Tokai Traditional Craft Exhibition, Mie Prefectural Board of Education Award in 2000.

In perfect condition, this decorative vase/ mizusashi is 7 inches at its widest point (18cm), and stands 9 inches tall (23cm). It comes in its original box signed and stamped by the artist, with a custom wrapping cloth, and with an informational insert in Japanese detailing the artist and kiln.
