Important large 17 cm. bronze mortar with pestle, European, Flemish/Dutch or German, ca. 1500-1550.
Beautiful Gothic style, with widening body and fine zoomorphic lion handles. Very large size and done in an early bronze alloy, somewhat polished. Comes with very old pestle, possible from the 17th. century.
Size: Massive apothecary mortar, 17 cm. tall and 14 cm. wide, weighing ca. 5,2 kilograms, incl. the 23,5 cm. pestle.
Provenance: The Estate of Carl-johan Hummeltoft (1958-2020), Birkerød, Denmark. Carl-Johan was a vivid collector and among other areas, he held an impressive collection of early European pottery and metal items.
