This Kobu- Shino chawan is by Sakai Kobu and is an exceptional example of his work. The nebula like decoration around the intentionally distorted tsu-tsu style chawan with undulating lip has a quality of three dimensions within the glaze. The rich and well controlled surface exhibits iron red, blue-grey, white and lavender tones within the glaze and it is obvious why Sakai is so highly regarded as a modern Mino potter by looking at this chawan...

This great celadon & tessha glazed chawan is by noted 20th century master; Kawai Takeichi (Bu'ichi). This elegantly formed chawan exhibits a skillful use of iron tessha over a gosu based celadon glaze that shows a wonderfully mysterious that appears like drifting “metallic” clouds on a soft amber to green background. The interior of the chawan is also awash with broad bands and speckles of the rich iron glaze that seems suspended on the surface...

Traditional wood fired Aka-Shino chaire made by the late Kato Yasukage XIV prior to changing his name to Yasukage and thus the box is signed Kato Shoji. Elegant and traditional in form with quick, gestural spatula marks on the front and back the rich, nearly crimson iron surface is painted with a nice dusting of wood ash from the wood firing with throwing marks adding to the overall decoration...

Tall and imposing Hagi vase form made by kurinuki master, Kaneta Masanao. At over 14" tall, the vessel is impressive and commands its space much like an ancient medieval citadel. The pot is glazed in a Shiro-Hagi glaze that has significant areas of blushed pinkish hues over half of the form and vivid areas of intense white speckles adorning the absolute purity of the form...

Rare black and white inlay vase by Kyoto master potter, Kondo Yutaka. Measuring 21.5 x 15cm this vase is cloaked in a black textured surface with impressed, inlay decoration of stark and contrasting white across the surface...

Pleasant crackle style chawan with Rimpa influenced design under and over the glaze. This chawan was made by veteran Kyoto native potter, Suzuki Soji who was a student of Tomimoto Kenkichi. Suzuki's chawan now days can cost 200,000 yen and more.

This chawan is in excellent condition and does not have a box.

Though it is easy to spot some influences of his master, Arakawa Toyozo, this chawan is all Tsukigata Nahiko. The swell and rhythm of the throwing, the application of a rich red iron underglaze and his soft and seductive Shino creates a style that is easy to differentiate from most other Mino/Shino potters...

A very fine ash glazed Haiyu-Shino chawan by Heian Seijiro. This ash glazed, Haiyu, boxed chawan measures 5.4” X 3.2” and is in excellent condition. The surface of the piece is very luminescent and is wonderful crazed resembling kanyu (double refractory) style celadons

An extremely well fired Iga chawan by Shigaraki and Iga potter; Furutani Kazuya. This medieval styled chawan has a pleasant cylindrical form with areas of running ash, dusted ash and hi-iro along with clamshell impressions from where the bowl rested while being fired. The interior is coated in a rich olive toned ash and a thick pool of ash which built up due to the angle at which the chawan was placed in the kiln...

At nearly a foot tall and in perpetual motion, this modern spiral vase was made by the late kato Yasukage XIV circa 2008. Tall and imposing the spiraled surface is glazed in a rich Shino glaze that shows off a wide array of textures and color variations from pure white, blushed pink hues and rich iron red circling the base of the pot. The textured flutes draw one in and around the pot and create a vivid canvas for this creative master gone way to early...

Serene yuteki temmoku conical chawan made in the Chinese taste, though Japanese. The chocolaty oil spots float on the darker iron glaze as if suspended, or frozen in motion. The clay is a a fine buff stoneware and the kodai, foot is well tooled. The chawan is signed, but has not been read, though it is a fine bowl...

Classical kohiki, powdered slip chawan by Ogawa Tetsuo (b.1937). Rich full form that makes for an exceptional chawan with a fine lip and excellent kodai with some crinkled clay peaking through the slip as if emerging from melting clay, the potters forever frozen in the base of the bowl where the pot was dipped in slip. Simple and complex at the same time.

Though subtle, there is a power to kohiki ware that is most time lost in simple illustrations...
