Hand-woven silk sakiori obi (sash) whose weft is bunch of mixed color of silk yarn and warp is black cotton yarn. Generally sakiori is hand-woven of recycled strips from old cloth for wefts , however, we call the one also sakiori, whose wefts are bunch of yarns. In excellent condition. A pair of miniature wood sculpture of Ebisu and Daikoku which are two of the Japanese Seven Dieties believed to bring good luck. Ebisu is a diety of fishery which brings plentiful catch and Daikoku is a diety of agriculture which brings good harvest. Both are in excellent condition with an original wood box. 20th century. Cotton and silk, mixed weave haori with shibori asanoha (hemp leaf) pattern which is dyed with the root of murasaki or murasaki-sou (lithospermum), one kind of grass. It is called "shikon-zome". Murasaki was grown since Asuka period (very late 6th to early 8th century) and purple was thought as the noble color...

Shonai obi (sash) hand-woven of cotton for warps and paper yarn for wefts. It is made in Shonai region in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district. It is dyed with vegetable indigo and has beautiful tassels in both ends. In excellent condition except for a few tiny stains. The first half of the 20th century. 29cm x 3m56cm

Silk meisen kimono with double kasuri apple and strawberry pattern on yellow ground. Kasuri pattern was dyed with stencil-resist-dye (katazome) for both weft and warp yarn (heiyo-kasuri). Generally in good condition but has some brownish stains and some in the lining too and the silk tape in the hem is a bit dirty. Mid 20th century. 126cm x 146cm

A bag for backpack made of Miyama Kansuge, "hiroro" by dialect which is a group of carex. It is made in Aizu region in Fukushima prefecture. It has purple and dark indigo cotton cloth interknitted in the cord. 20th century. In excellent condition. 40cm x 39cm.

Noragi (work wear) made of asa (hemp) whose both wets and warps are hand-plied. The sleeves are vegetable indigo dyed cotton. A few holes with mending patches. Late 19th to mid 20th century. 109cm x 71cm

Minsa obi (sashi) made in Taketomi Island in Okinawa. The features of Taketomi Minsa obi are: both wefts and warps are machine-spun cotton and handwoven. It has four and five block warp kasuri pattern and both selvedges have uneven horizontal stripes which symbolize mukade (centipede). Baby's yogi which is one kind of bed cloth, a top cover in the shape of kimono. It has cotton cloth with katazome (stencil-resist-dye) for outside and indigo cotton for the lining. It has thick cotton inside for warmth and was used in the cold district or in winter. It is from Fukushima prefecture in Tohoku district. It is an offering at Kijin Shrine in Saitama prefecture next to Tokyo which is the one of four shrines worshipping ogres in Japan. In good condition. A sheet of "tatougami" made of recycled washi (Japanese handmade paper) used at a pawn shop. Hocked items were wrapped in this tatougami and kept. Bashofu kimono hand-woven of banana fiber for both wefts and warps. The yarn is rather thicker and tougher comparing with very fine yarn for thinner and higher quality bashofu, so that it is for a everyday kimono or work wear. Brown stripes are also banana fibers. A pair of cotton tabi with sashiko and a pair of kokake. Tabi is made of hand-spun white cotton and has nice sashiko for strength. Soles are machine-woven. Kokake is also made of hand-spun cotton and dyed with vegetable indigo and has fine sashiko for also strength. Kokake has no soles and it is worn over zori (Japanese sandals) for warmth and waterproof in winter. Both are in excellent condition. The first half of the 20th century. Miniature set of koi-nobori (carp streamer) which is put up on the Boy's Festival (or Child's Day on May 5). It is often decorated with miniature yoroi-kabuto (armors) or samurai dolls. Carp is a symbol of strength and success. 1970s. Two banners and outer cloth of two carp are synthetic. In good condition except for a small tip in the one of spears and one of tiny screw for wheels (yaguruma) is lost...

Two pieces of yogi (bedding) which are hand-sewn by a girl student at the sewing school which were established around 1880. It is called "hinagata" and generally one third of measurement of a real one. The left one is sodenashi yogi (sleeveless top cover) and the right one is yogi (top cover with sleeves). The purpose of making sewing samples is efficiency for time and material. It has been made till 1940s in the sewing school of which students are mostly girls...

Korean wrapping cloth, chogappo which is made of recycled ramie (choma) fragments. All hand sewn except for a blue belt. The frame cloth is silk gauze."Pojagi" is a general name for wrapping cloth and "chogappo" is one kind of pojagi which is patchwork with silk as well as asa ( reference source: "Korean Embroidery and Wrapping Cloths from the Choson Dynasty" published by Japan Art & Culture Association in 1995 ). Maiwai-gi which is a festive kimono of fishermem. It was given to fishermen from a master of fishermen or an owner of a fish boat on the occasion of large catch. It is mostly made of cotton with auspicious motifs with katazome (stencil-resist-dye) and partly hand painting. The original location of the Maiwai-gi is Boso peninsula in Chiba prefecture since late Edo period and spread along the Pacific Coast. This one has thick cotton lining so that it is made into yogi (kimono shaped bedding)...

Pilgrim's hanten made of thin white cotton with many stamps of the sacred sites that are called "Shodo-shima Hachiju-Hachi-kasho Reijo (Shodo Island 88 holy places) located in Kagawa prefecture in Shikoku. The pilgrimage route was opened in late 17th century. The head band has stamps from Omine-san (Mt.Omine) in Nara prefecture. No sign of a place in the belly band. Silk kimono worn on the stage of Kyogen which is a traditional short comedic drama. It is often performed with Noh drama. The kimono is made of thin plain silk with katazome lattice pattern and brush dye for green parts. The lining is pongee silk. The dye is all vegetable and sumi. Junrei's hakui (pilgrim's hanten) with many stamps of holy places in Shikoku, which is made of white hand-spun cotton. The ink letters reads "Shikoku Hachiju-hachi-ka-reisho" which means eighty eight holy places in Shikoku. It seems that the pilgrim visited all the eighty eight holy places. In good condition. Long cloth with shibori which is worn by a woman when she worked in the fields to protect skin from sunburn or bug bites, which covers a head with only an opening for eyes. 4 pieces of Nara Uchiwa whose history dates back to Nara period (A.D.710~794). It began as manual side line work of the Shinto priest of Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara. The traditional motifs (Tenpyo Moyo) such as peonix, deer, kylin (imaginary animal), dragon, Parrot etc. These four (originally five) were made by Ikeda Gankodo which is only existing maker of it in Nara.
