‏Oil on canvas laid on board painting of snowy high mountain framed by a lake and trees, 12" by 16" (15 1/2" by 19 1/2" framed). Although unsigned (and Detreville's output frequently WAS unsigned), the handling, subject matter and color palette strongly suggest the hand of the noted California painter. I have owned and sold other unsigned paintings as being by Detreville, and I will stand by this being one of his works. The name "Louis Pauling" is written faintly in pencil on reverse but that might be merely the name of a previous owner or otherwise unrelated to authorship. Detreville was born in South Carolina but is now thought of entirely as a California artist. According to the Hughes biography, the artist was born "into a prominent old family of French ancestry", his grandfather having fought in the Revolutionary War with George Washington. Detreville is considered to have been a self-taught artist. By 1892 he was in California, settling in Stockton and then by 1910 in San Francisco. A prolific artist who promoted his own work, the most commonly seen paintings are of the San Francisco Bay area, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and Northern California. This painting is in good condition with the exception of a round "glass ring" circular area of disturbed paint at upper left; it could be inpainted by a restorer. Compare to other works in my shop I am offering as being by Detreville.
