Fine bronze brushpot depicting a landscape by the famous Takusai Honma lineage of artists. 4.75” (12 cm) tall and 3.5” (9 cm) in diameter, the piece is in excellent condition with an untouched patina. Located on Sado Island, the Takusai Honma family of bronze artists was well known for their work in lost-wax casting and their mastery of patination that produced a sublime, variegated patina. Although the art and name of Takusai Honma continued through six generations, the work of the earliest members of the line is considered the best. Comparison with other examples indicates that this brushpot is a rare work by Takusai Honma II who lived from 1846-1904. This is a particularly good example, featuring a tranquil mountain landscape that would have appealed greatly to a scholar in 19th century Japan.
