In 2010, Kato Kozo was bestowed with the esteemed title of Living National Treasure, a testament to his mastery in the realm of ceramics. His renown stems from the exquisite range of Shino and Ki-seto glazes, as well as his distinctive Tetsu-yu (iron glaze), cherished for its inviting tactile quality and subtly intricate surface textures. The ample, graceful contours of his works, coupled with their ability to evoke a sense of holding a ripe persimmon, create a profound sensory experience, enhancing the interaction with these magnificent Tetsu-yu chawans.

Born in Mizunami, Gifu Prefecture, Kato Kozo's artistic journey was guided by the mentorship of Kato Koubei and Arakawa Toyozo. His foray into the realm of creativity took an unconventional turn when he secured a spot for Western-style painting at the prestigious Nitten Exhibition in 1954. This marked the inception of his extraordinary artistic trajectory.

Kato's exceptional talent garnered acclaim through a series of prestigious awards, including the Asahi Prize at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition, and the highest honor at the inaugural Tokai Traditional Crafts Exhibition. The Kato Kobei Prize and the Japan Ceramic Society Prize further enriched his accolades. His expertise also extended to roles as a councilor and judge at esteemed events like the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition and the Chunichi International Exhibition. Additionally, he holds the position of a judge for the Tokai Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition. His deep involvement in the arts is underscored by his regular membership in the Japan Kogei Association.

Central to his artistic oeuvre are creations primarily encompassing pottery in the forms of Shino, Seto-guro, and iron glaze. Through his unwavering dedication and mastery, Kato Kozo continues to imprint an indelible mark on the world of ceramics, with each piece bearing the unmistakable essence of his unique artistry.
