A fascinating Jar-shaped set of stacking food boxes known as a Jubako in multi-color dating from the early 20th century. Jubako were used to serve food to groups or family on festive occasions, where the food was presented in the box, and each person would take what they wanted, rather than have the meal served on individual dishes as in more formal Kaiseki meals. Assembled it is 20 cm (8 inches) diameter 32.5 cm (13 inches) tall and is in overall excellent condition.

The outside of this elegantly understated container is simply semitransparent red lacquer over cloth in the Tame-nuri style opening to reveal an interior glowing with large patches of applied gold and silver. It is 20.5 cm (8 inches) square, 10 cm (4 inches) tall and in overall excellent condition, with minor marks from use on the bottom. Inside the box is contained a number of papers as well as a receipt from the late Meiji period, circa 1910.

This Japanese red lacquered wooden serving platter or tray is 13 inches in diameter. It is carved as a bream, which is the Japanese fish symbol for the "bounty of the sea". There are several layers of different colors of red lacquer which heighten the fluid appearence of the fish. The surface is slightly dulled with use and age, the charger is in wonderful condition.

This Japanese hibachi is made from a single piece of Kiri wood, aka paulownia. A design of thick raised gold lacquer, aka Makie depicts Botan peony plant with added colors of pink and green for definition of flower and a single leaf. Hibachi comes with the original copper insert and the condition is very good. A couple of hard to find scratches and tiny (pinheadsize) dents on the top rim. Hibachi dates from late Meiji period. These bowls with matching inset lids are crafted from turn wood, and are lacquered black and red in the folk art tradition. They are intended for everyday use for soup and rice. Each has a kanji character painted in red lacquer on the lid and centers of the base. There is minor lacquer flaking here and there and usual evidence of use, but overall the condition is good. The sizes, though similar, are not exactly the same. Acquired in Kyoto around 1973.

Antique Japanese jingasa, a special protective hat worn by samurai. It is covered in a special lacquer called "tatake nuri" and is decorated with a star shaped like blades, and delicate carvings around the finial. The Hiramaki-e technique, which dates from the latter part of the Heian Period (794-1185), was preceded by Togidashi maki-e, a technique in which not only the design, but the whole surface is covered with clear lacquer after the sprinkling of metal powder.
