19th century Japanese bronze mae-kanagu (tobacco pouch clasp fitting) in a form of two sumo wrestler dolls and a fan used by the judge in sumo matches and decorated with sun, moon and a constellation. Elegant design, great crisp detailing, gilded and silvered highlights. Length 1 9/16 inches.

18th to early 19th century Japanese sword fuchi (bordering piece between the sword guard and the handle) with gilded relief design of playful shishi (Buddhist lion), all on finely punched ground texture called nanako, which means “fish-eggs” as it resembles fine rows of caviar. Excellent quality crisp work, some wear to gilding. Length 1.46 inches.

A good Arta dish of awabigata form decorated in somenishikide style with a pattern of various shellfish and plants with a seascape of waves and plovers above. A brocade band of Karakusa scroll in iron red and gilt inset in a “pea green” enamel ground framing the composition combined with gilding to rim. The exterior painted with waves and boats...

A dish of plain everted form measuring seven suns in diameter and decorated in somenishikide style with a traditional kacho-ga pattern of a pair of Butterflies and a Rock Peony. An auspicious pattern symbolising harmony and prosperity. The reverse decorated with scattered Peony leaf sprigs and the base is plain. The dish dating to circa 1780-1800. 19th century Japanese kiseruzutsu - tobacco pipe holder - carved out of a section of stag antler. Very clever use of natural skin texture and color to represent an old rotting pine log with its peeling bark. Two holes in the upper back part for hanging. Elegant piece in Japanese taste, excellent patina, in perfect condition. Length 8 1/2 inches.

These are two wooden miniature Fudos ( Cetaka ) who is the incarnate of Dainichi Nyorai, the highest ranking Buddha. It is said that he can change evil minds of demons and make them good. He has an expression of rage, holding a sword in the right hand, the kensaku ( originally a trap for birds or small animals ) in the left hand ( Both are lost of these Fudos ). One is standing on a rock, but this wooden one is not an original. Right-H: 12cm W: 7.5cm Left-H: 10.5cm W: 4.2cm

Late 19th century wooden netsuke representing a theatrical mask of Shakumi - for information on this character representing women who are demented or hysterical with grief see NETSUKE MASKS by Bushell, p. 106. Excellent crisp detailing, wonderful pensive expression, beautiful warm patina. Height 2 7/16 inches.

19th century Japanese silver and Satsuma obidome (sash ornament) with various blooming flowers with stems and leaves. Obidome is worn on an obi cord that holds the obi sash together, it is the only type of jewelry worn by Japanese women on formal occasions, and could serve as netsuke as well. Excellent quality painting, numerous color and gold enamels, in excellent condition, metal fitting on the back for an obi cord. Back is stamped with a single character GIN (silver). Diameter 1.48 inches.

19th century small wooden netsuke (works as ojime as well) carved as seated Zen Patriarch Daruma enveloped in his monastic robe. According to a legend he had fallen into deep trance, and sat meditating without moving for 9 years, so his feet withered. Skillfully carved out of ichii (yew wood) in characteristic Hida school style with clever use of wood color and structure to add to the charm of the piece. Nice patina, in great condition. Height 13/16 inches.

Late 19th to early 20th century Japanese ceramic brush pot made in raku technique with rich multicolored glaze and an unglazed sector with stylized painting of autumn grasses. Beautifully made, awesome colors produced by raku process. Signed in gold lacquer with 2 characters on the back reading GERAKU. There appear to be characters incised into the body on the bottom, but I am not entirely sure. Unusual piece, pleasant to handle. Height 5 inches, maximum diameter at the top 4 5/8 inches.

19th century staghorn ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) carved in a shape of a man’s face, his mouth open in an incredibly wide yawn. Good design, nice patina on the surface, natural imperfections in staghorn, in excellent condition. Height 11/16 inches. Wooden stand used for photography is not included.
