A large Kakiemon low bowl painted in underglaze blue with some light enamelling in yellow, green and iron red, somenishikide style made for the Japanese domestic market. The central reserve superbly painted in sansui landscape of mountainous cliffs overhanging a body of water with two small fishing boats. The cavetto of the bowl decorated with the shochikubai, the Three Friends of Winter. The reverse decorated with krakusa with chrysanthemum form blooms, symbols of longevity...

A very unusual octagonal dish in new style enamels dating to around the year 1800, featuring three figures, the main of which is a figure wearing a buttoned jacket and perhaps a klapmut style hat with distinctive slops, which identifies him as a seaman, rather than the more usual merchant; see last image no 6 a late 18th century print of a Sailor in “slops”. The tight curls of his hair betray his foreign origin, although he retains an overall oriental appearance...

This is a fabulous rare piece of Japanese Cloisonne. It is not signed but it could have easily been made Hayashi, Kinuken, or Miwa. It stands inches 6 inches tall and is in excellent condition.

This is a rare hand-spun natural Shina-fu ( linden)boro bag from the Meiji period (1868-1911). It was originally a stiff material, but it softened after being used many times. The repair marks are cotton fabric and hemp thread. linden cloth naturally turn dark brown over time due to the tannins in the fibers of these trees. There are stains and repair marks. This beautiful processional Satsuma Jar or koro is a treasure from he Meiji era. It is signed by both Sozan and Kinkozan. This stoutly made jar is 4 1/2 inches tall and 5 inches wide. The mixed metal lid is a replacement from the Meiji era, that fits perfect and is possibly more attractive than the original. We also have the original lid. It was broken in half and glued back together. The replacement lid has a gold wash in between the raised flowers. The piece has virtually no wear to the gold...

This is a a japanese antique edo Period Tsutsugaki Children's Silk Kimono of a large herd of frolicking horses. A children's kimono made in the Edo period to celebrate the men's festival of wealthy merchant families. A herd of horses with various patterns is strongly expressed in ink with Tsutsugaki for children's wear, Movement is brisk.There is a light stain, but it is not noticeable. This is another rare offering as we have never seen anything like this piece before. The piece has a beautiful mix of butterflies and flowers with a gradation of tones throughout the body. It is not signed and likely could have be made by one of these artists, Hattori, Sosuke, or Kumeno. With the lid on, the jar stands 20 1/2 inches. Condition is very good but there are some slight firing flaws in the enamel, damage to an area near one of the feet and a side blemish to the enamel...

Tiny repairs of gold glint along the rim of this misshapen wan-gata bowl from the Utsutsukawa tradition of Nagasaki. The bowl comes with a silk pouch enclosed in an old wooden box. There is a kutsuki on one side, where it adhered to something else in the kiln. The bowl is 12 x 10.5 x 6.5 cm (4-3/4 x 4-1/8 x 2-1/2 inches) and is in overall fine condition, dating from the 19th century.

Japanese dated Edo period rectangular form wood "senryo-bako" hinged coin box on two geta feet with cast iron hardware including edge brackets, hinges, handle, and front lockplate. Antique Japanese small haribako (sewing box). Made with 5 small drawers of various sizes. A hinged lid on top flips up to reveal a tray for storing a pin cushion and sewing supplies. This pulls out to reveal a secret hidden drawer behind it. To the right of this is a flip up holder for the third hand clip. Early 17th century (Edo Period 1603-1868) distorted shoe shaped (tsutsugata) white Shino Chawan with a rounded brim, made of light, coarse, unrefined Mino clay. The expertly thrown body was trimmed with a potter's knife in the lower part of the body and around the foot ring.

Wonderful Late Edo period (19cc) Shino ware Chawan for tea ceremony

The fine crackle look with natural kiln vivid cracks gives the bowl an authentic wabi sabi feel .
Overall, it is a lovely example of an old, professionally crafted Shino ware tea bowl.

Shino pottery is produced in today's Gifu prefecture since 16th century and it is distinguished by thick white glazes, red marks and the surface of small holes.

Remarkable Wabi-Sabi Shino Chawan made by Seto master Kato Shuntai (1802-1877)
The potter name "Shuntai" is carved on the bottom.

Kato Shuntai is a notable potter from Seto area, Aichi prefecture who lived in the late Edo period. He followed his father profession as a ceramist at the age of 15 and soon he received a name Shuntai from Tokugawa, the 11th Daimyo of modern Nagoya. Kato Shuntai expanded Seto ware techniques adding Shino, Oribe and Mugiwara styles to his works.

A beautifully hand-crafted Shino ware chawan with crackled glaze by Kato Gorohachi (?-1900). The potter signature is carved on the bottom. Probably inspired by early Korean Ido examples, the bowl perfectly lies in hands giving strong Wabi feel.
There is not much information available about this Meiji potter even in Japan and his birth year is unknown.
He worked in the Hinno kiln of Aichi Prefecture in late 19 century.

Antique Japanese small cha tansu (tea chest). Made with chestnut wood frame and burled hardwood drawer fronts. Two slider panels and a drop in panel are covered with gold-leafed silk on wood. The center of the chest has a small display area with a staggered shelf and two small drawers. The lower portion of the chest has three small drawers and a full-width drawer on the bottom.
