These dishes have an underglaze blue design of treasure ships (wishes for good fortune). The reverse of each is painted with a stylized wave design encircling the foot and a double gourd mark with two characters is painted on the bases. Acquired in the 1960s from an American collection. There are minor nicks to the glaze on the rims, otherwise good condition – no cracks or repairs.

Rare pair of foxes that guard a Inari shrine. One holding a jewel in the mouth, the other a key. Each squatting on a little pedestal. Earthenware with mineral color pigments red, blue, white and black. Japan, Edo period, 19th century.

One tail restored, key broken and partially replaced for the sake of symmetry, few chips. All in all excellent condition.

Beautiful Japanese Daki Ningyo standing at the unusual height of 26 inches (66 cm), making him a very rare and striking figure of the merchant class. He is wearing an Inro with a pair of Kokishiki dolls inside. It is most uncommon to see this type of Ningyô outside of Japan, for they are highly prized by the Japanese. This is an amazing piece of Satsuma from Yozan. The vase stands 5 1/4 inches tall and it is covered with eye straining detail. It is better than the images show and in hand has a jewel like aura. Condition is excellent.

A Japanese Bronze mirror of circular form decorated with Chrysanthemum Sprays a pair of Cranes, Tsuru, in flight, a circular ring and a central Turtle, Kame, shaped boss. Probably late Kamakura or Nambokucho in date, first half of the fourteenth century. The mirror measures approximately 11.45cm in diameter, and 0.76cm high at the rim, and the edge measures 5.1mm in width, and weighs 273 grams. Antique Japanese single section isho tansu (clothing chest) with two large drawers. Made all of sugi (crytomeria) wood with deep reddish brown lacquer finish on the drawer panels and black lacquer top, sides and front frame. Iron work includes two elaborate lock plates, raised seed pods in corners, and moko shaped drawer pulls. From northern Japan, possibly Nigata area. Meiji Period (1868 - 1912) Size: 18 1/2" high x 32 1/4" wide x 15 1/2" deep.

Antique Japanese pair of wonderful Koma Inu shrine guardian fu-dogs, carved from keyaki (elm) wood. Traces of painted details in green, white and brown. Expressively carved with great curling manes and tails. One of the fu-dogs has a single horn on top of it's head. Edo Period. Size of taller fu-dog: 19" high x 9" wide x 16" deep. Size of fu-dog without horn: 17 1/2" high x 9" wide x 16" deep.

Original Antique Japanese Isho tansu with locking bar over three drawers. One large bottom drawer with chrysanthemum Iron lock. Locking safe compartment with two small interior drawers and one secret compartment hidden away! Original opaque black lacquer finish on front, sides and top are a deep red translucent lacquer finish, iron hardware with scrolling design and mon on locking bar. Pair of Kinko (soft metal, as distinguished from iron) menuki. The soft metal copper alloy with dark patination (perhaps shakudo) depicting a pair of shishi or dogs (these are more dog like than most shishi I've seen, which are often thought to be lions.) The dogs with hair defined with fine incising. Decoration in gold including spots and pupils on the dogs, the collars each with a bell, and sprays of flowers...

This dish is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a strong palette of red and green overglaze enamel with gold highlights. The base is inscribed with a spurious Chinese Wanli mark in underglaze cobalt blue. Good condition, with light wear, no restorations.

This candlestick is fashioned from Copper with a ribbed shaft rising from a stylized chrysanthemum-form base terminating into a flower-form top with pricket to receive a candle. It has been attached to a later turned-wood base. It is for use in a Buddhist altar. Good condition.

Antique Japanese beige ceramic crackleware satsuma pilgrim vase, Meiji period 1868-1912. It is beautifully painted with two different scenes. The front and reverse are painted with a wheat plant in a field of chrysanthemums. The sides have cherry blossoms blooming in a stylized wave pattern. The mouth of the vase is square shaped, the base is rectangular. It measures 10" tall, 7.25" widest 2" deep.

Antique Japanese lacquer vanity box with a nishiji (sprinkled gold) background, gold lacquer painted flora including peonies and chrysanthemums, recessed side handles, four front drawers with hirute style handles. The top of the box has a lacquer stand and mirror box, with painted butterfly. Inside the box is the Original bronze mirror with flying cranes and trees. A large Japanese antique oribe ware ceramic teapot with thick dripping blue green glaze, ridged edges, two handles, large finial on lid, bare areas on sides painted with flowers. 20th Century Size: 16" H, 17" W

A wonderful large Japanese wood carved statue of an anthropomorphic tanuki. He holds a large mokugyo or temple bell with carved dragons in one hand and a lacquered drumstick in the other. Beautifully preserved, hand-carved antique piece.

This is a beautiful Japanese cloisonne vase. Though not signed, the workmanship and colors clearly speaks Hayashi Kodenji made this. This same opinion is held by North America's leading cloisonne collector. The vase stands 7 1/4 inches tall. It appears perfect but there is a virtually invisible repair to the midnight blue enamel edge shown in the last image.

Extraordinary stunning Japanese robe of purple woven asa (hemp), with gold woven through in striations and bold gingko leaf design. The suou is the traditional kimono once worn during ceremonies by the samurai during the Muromachi period (1392-1573).
As styles of fashion evolved latter around the 17th century onwards, the suou became in important costume worn by the actors of the noh and kyogen theaters. Today the suou is still used in Noh and Kyogen, and with the Shrine maidens...

Unusual natural Antique Japanese burlwood container. Great for storing small items. Original condition and warm finish. Meiji period 1868-1912. It measures 14" wide 10" deep 6" tall.

Two nicely matched Edo period mixed metal menuki. Each with decoration of a duck in water. Some difference in the detailing of the water and perhaps different duck species (though one could explain the lack of a crest and color on one because it was the female of a pair of mandarin wood ducks.) For the price, they would work quite well together on a tsuka (sword hilt.) Longer one, about 1 1/2 inches. Good condition.

Antique Japanese hanging scroll of monkeys in stone snow lanterns in a forest of pine trees. A mother forages for food while her infant feeds. In the lower lantern a monkey gazes over the snow the second has captured an insect. It measures overall: 21" by 80" image: 15.5" by 44.75". Meiji period 1868-1912.

Antique Japanese hanging scroll of a monkey dancing the sambaso dance. It bears two seals, reading 'Genno,' Two seals, one for whom painted the monkey, the other who wrote the calligraphy. Haiku / Waka Poem made for the New Year. Taisho Period (1912 - 1926). It measures overall: 17" wide by 76" long, image: 14.5" wide by 43" long.

Antique Japanese velvet painting "Yuzen Birodo". It is a beautiful image of Mount Fuji with a small town on a lake, the foreground is full of water lilies. It bears a seal in the bottom right of the image. Yuzen Birodo or velvet painting was a technique made popular during the 17th century. The artist would work using a special process of dying where the image is created in the weave of the fabric thus creating an image of rich colors...

Lovely hand painted Japanese Kutani tea caddy with inner lid. The jar features birds in flight, a slight crackle finish, gold accents, and is in excellent condition. There are no chips, no cracks, no hairlines, no repairs. It is signed on the bottom. The tea caddy measures about 5.75 Inches (14.6 cm)tall. Circa 1900.

Japanese Genroku Period Imari Tokkuri sake bottle in 4-sided rectangular form. From the early 1700's. Blue on white porcelain base with red and gold overglaze enamels in a floral design. 10 1/2" tall by 4 1/4" by 4 1/4".

This is a finely hand-carved 19th century netsuke depicting a Horse outfitted with an elegant saddle that appears standing on a base that functions as a Seal. The seal shows traces of ink. An opening in the middle of the seal serves as chimney himotoshi. It has a rich patina and shows a luster and smooth surface. Netsuke measures 0,42 inches (1.1cm) wide, 1.34 inches (3.4cm) wide, and 1.15 inches (2.9cm) tall. It is in excellent preserved condition.

Wooden Buddhist statue, probably one of the 12 Shinsho who guard Yakushi Nyorai. Both arms and other parts are lost. 18th century or earlier. H:16.7cm W:6cm

Soft, light weight wood, dark and light brown mottled, netsuke representing a snake coiling through a rock. The snake in gilt yellow bronze. Signed at the bottom: Osai. Japan, Edo or Meiji period, mid 19th century.

This a rather rare subject Netsuke made during the 19th century, in Japan, that depicts a rat that is gnawing at a large radish, on top of a straw rice scoop. The rat and radish are made from Sentokudo, a bronze alloy, that has acquired a dark patina with the passage of time. The ring at the bottom of the rice scoop serves as himotoshi. Unsigned. Netsuke measures 1.46 inches (3.7cm) wide, 1.68 inches (4.2cm) long, and 0.25 inches (6mm) thick. It is in excellent preserved condition.

Original woodblock of a samurai by Japanese master and teacher Toyokuni Utagawa, 1769-1825. Signed in lower left, the print is float mounted. In very good antique condition, there is some worm hole damage along the right edge. Measures sight size 13.5 inches high, 9.25 inches high.

An impressive mokubi painting in ink and gold on silk depicting the Zen Buddhist patriarch Bodhidharma/Daruma in profile. Signed and sealed: Imai Tenroku (b. 1866), a specialist in the painting of Buddhist subjects. The present painting is dated Taisho 8 (1919). Fully inscribed box and paper w. artist’s data. L 185, W 52 cm. Picture frame: L 112 cm, W 40.5 cm. Condition: Very fine (at the bottom a small portion of the silk has loosened from the mounting).

Antique Japanese painting of a Goju-no-to, five storied pagoda of the typical Japanese Buddhist temple. The pagoda is decorated using Kanji with a repeated sutra and other passages. This is charming Netsuke, hand-carved during the 19th century in Japan, that depicts a Seated Man, who is beating on a Drum, while stroking his long beard with his left hand. Use and handling has given this piece a nice mwllow patina and a smooth and lustrous surface. It feels very nice to the touch. It is signed in what appears as Hiragana script, but, we are not able to interpret its meaning. It is in excellent preserved condition. It measures 1.25 inches (3.2cm) wide, 1.62 inches (4.1cm)...

An impressive and hard to come by pair of Japanese architectural lanterns that once flanked a Japanese Buddhist temple. Cast in bronze with eight separate sections;The verdigris bronze octagonal roof-form top with its jeweled flame finial; Eight auspicious Buddhist symbols; Each roof panel has the Tokugawa family crest (aoi mon); And edged with eight open mouth dragon head terminals.

The underside of the roof has its eight delineated rafters; And craved in relief swirling cloud format...
