An alabaster cosmetic vessel of squat baluster form, a rather substantial and attractive specimen with ancient remnants of Kohl inside!
Size: 56 mm. tall and 53 mm. wide.
Condition: Nice VF, the lip with some small edge chip, othervise superb and attractive for it's type.

Beautiful little snuff bottle made from translucent cream-colored aragonite, a 3.5-4 on the Mohs (hardness) scale, with carvings of a bat (symbol for good luck) with a strand of Chinese coins (means "fortune before your eyes" when paired with a bat). Republic period c1920

A pair of coral ground tea bowls, c 1900. Enamelled decoration in blue and green with black transfer printed contours. Since the use of printed decorations started earlier in Japan (in the 19th century) than in China it is probable that these bowls are Japanese. One bowl with illegible export (?) mark in red. Antique Japanese Noh mask of the O-beshimi fierce deity, or mythical tengu. "Beshimi" means "mouth clamped shut". This mask is hand-carved from kiri wood, and inside you can see the chisel marks left behind by the artist. There are visible traces of white gesso in the crevices of the face, which was used as a filler to cover the wood grain. Edo period, 19th century

Antique Chinese hanging scroll of a "Courtesan Playing the Flute" signed Qiu Ying.
This painting is of two courtesans waiting to entertain the emperor. The emperor would be seated in front of a screen of dragons. The empress would be seated in front of a scene with phoenixes. The courtesan on the right plays the flute while the courtesan on the left holds a fan. The skill of Qui Ying can be seen in the rendering of the sheer quality of the fan, the courtesan's sleeve is visible behind it...
